3rd party warranty?
So, the dealer provided 3rd party warranty on my 61 plate, 74k, E90 335d, expires at the end of June. It is with Warranty Wise. To extend it, is circa £600.
Warranty Direct are asking the same kinda money. BMW around about a grand. Should i extend? Or put £50-100 away each month into a repair fund? Most of the things on my E46 330d that needed replacing were wear and tear items. And warranty companies always want to wriggle out of every claim or fight you first.

I had a very poor experience with third party warranty (AA warranty) whxih the dealer had sold me. Long story short they refused to cover an item which was clearly listed as covered, claiming that the item was a workshop consumable and therefore not covered. It wasn't a consumable. I even had BMW confirm this. They still refused to cover it. My only option was small claims court, and I felt it wasn't worth the bother of time off work, etc for the sake of a £200 repair. My advice: stay clear. However I've heard of good things about the BMW warranty.

But i guess the BMW warranty requires main dealer maintenance and servicing?

I think so but I'm not sure. Someone will probably chime in to confirm, or just look at their website, I'm sure it will say.

wouldn't touch 3rd party warranty with a barge pole, they will always do their best to get out of any claim. Manufacturer's warranty always better IMHO, had a similar experience with Porsche and Honda, can't fault them. BMW doing OK so far apart from the £125 diagnostic charge "no matter what". But still better than 3rd party for sure.

I think we spoke about this on E46Zone, MJN. But my warranty is with Warranty Wise. I'm taking my car in next Monday for what looks like a faulty NOX sensor. I'll let you know how I get on as I think I'll be looking at a £300+ repair bill. We'll see how Warranty Wise handle it. If they refuse then I'll be cancelling the policy and just putting the money aside each month like you suggested.

Mine has mixed indi and BMW service, and warranty claims with BMW have not been an issue. As long as the parts are OEM and the services are up to date. I called BMW Warranty (Allianz Assistance) May 2014, and they put it in writing to me: Quote:

Thanks guys. That just made the BMW warranty more appealing.
I spoke to the guy who does my servicing, and he refuses to deal with 3rd party warranty companies, as he got sick of the hassle. I'll look a bit further into BMW one.

TBH, i'm tempted by the Driveline warranty from BMW which covers the most expensive parts which aren't wear n tear.
DriveLine Insured Warranty covers the main components that contribute to the engine, transmission and drive-train of your BMW. Please note that any components not listed are not covered. The maximum claims liability covered by DriveLine Insured Warranty is £5,000 inclusive of VAT. Casings Casings are covered when damaged by the failure of an insured component. Engine All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following: Cylinder head, cylinder head gasket, valves (excluding decarbonisation, burnt or pitted valves and valve seats), valve springs, valve guides, camshaft and bearings, camshaft followers, hydraulic lifters, timing gears, timing chains, piston and piston rings, cylinder liners and liner seals, connecting rods and small end bearings, gudgeon pins, crankshaft and crankshaft bearings, oil pump and oil pump drive, distributor driveshaft, flywheel, starter motor ring gear, engine management sensors. Final Drive All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following: Crown wheel and pinion, differential gears and bearings, 4X4 transfer box, halfshaft, halfshaft bearings, driveshafts, bearings and constant velocity joints, propeller shaft universal joints and centre bearing, wheel bearings, final drive sensors. This excludes rubber boots and gaiters. Gearbox All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following: Gears, shafts, synchroniser hubs and baulk rings, selector shafts and selector forks, internal bearings and bushes, oil pump, valve and valve block, clutches and brake bands, governor, torque converter, modulator valve, gearbox sensors. This excludes external linkages. Miscellaneous The rectification of oil leaks is not covered and the cost of seals and gaskets will be accepted where they are required as a direct consequence of a valid claim under the insurance. Sundries Working materials e.g. oils, filters, antifreeze are claimable as a direct result of a valid claim providing the vehicle is not within 1,000 miles of its next scheduled service. Timing Belts Timing belts and tensioners are covered providing that the last due change has taken place as specified by the manufacturer's schedule (proof required). Damage subsequently caused if timing belt has not been changed as specified by the manufacturer is specifically excluded. Turbo/Super charger Factory fitted turbocharger, intercooler and wastegate.

Just to add to this you can service the car at any vat registered garage under the BMW warranty, however any warranty work has to be done by BMW. I rang Mondial Assistance (UK) Limited and asked them and they said I can’t get warranty work done by a BMW specialist or other vat registered garage and then claim from BMW the car has to be repaired at a BMW dealer for warranty work.

In the end, i stumped up for the BMW Warranty! £663 with emergency cover, but with the £250 excess.
