313 alloy wheel corrosion

Evening everyone,

Sorry if this is a re post but just thought I would let everyone know who has 313 wheels.

If you notice any surface corrosion around the centre cap (Bmw logo ) take your car back to the dealer and if your still within warranty they will replace your alloys for new. I'm having four brand new 313's fitted tomorrow. It will be the third set of rears I have had since I got my 330d 2 years ago.

Apparently a common fault with the alloys due to dissimilar metals used.

Good result - what dealer was that? (Menzies in Stirling?). Good time for new tyres though with winter here.

Didn't realise I wasn't the only Falkirk-based forum user

Hmmmm. I bought a set of 313's about 3 years ago. I had them on a car I no longer own. I've since bought a 335is. They come with 313's. The car was built in May so the wheels are perfect. I'm now using my old left over 313's as winter wheels. I did notice the oxidation a while back and didn't really think much of it. Now should I just pretend they are the ones that came with my new car and try getting them warrantied? The problem is the ones you buy have BMW Performance on them and the ones on the car have the M logo. Not sure I should try.

Sorry Officer Jase. And it's really not fraud. I bought the wheels at a BMW dealership. The same warranty should apply. It's been under 4 years. And putting the "thought" on the internet is not exactly clever how? The dealerships are going to comb internet forums looking for guys like me? Then somehow find out who I actually am and get the police involved? All those guys that say they have tunes better deactivate their accounts now. I'm sure you're a choir boy too.

paying that much money for a set of quality wheels they just shouldn't corrode so I don't see how there can be mention of fraud, the fraud is only giving a 3 year warranty

I've had a full new set of 313's under warranty also.
The later wheels have a different part number apparently, so swapping an older set onto a newer car is a no no

Just busy doing a google search and found this post. I have the 313 wheels, out of the three year warranty now but one badly corroded wheel and three starting to show signs.

I doubt very much BMW will refurb them for free but I'm going to ask.

You need to have them refurbed, diamond cut back and lacquered. It's not cheap.

Have the 313s on ma msport and so far still in good nick. The diamond cut finish is notorious for losing its good looks if the lacquer gets broken then the degeneration spreads rapidly throughout the whole wheel. On another forum guy was telling me he had to sign disclaimer with the refurbisher who could only give him a 2 year guarantee

Its got nothing to do with lack of quality or certain types of metal, its the simple fact that its a diamond cut face!
IE. bare metal which is then covered with a half arsed lacquer.
The second salt or a stone gets into that lacquer its game over.
Even if you replace them with brand new ones its only a matter of time until they do exactly the same again. The only solution is to spray them.

2 year guarantee on diamond cuts is very good, the one I used last won't give ANY guarantee, and says any diamond cuts that last more than 6 months are doing well.

Personally I think they look terrible too, I couldn't wait to get my diamond cut wheels sprayed one colour and they look much better now. Id so the same with 313's too if I ever bought a car that had them
