Valve stem seals shot....
So my car is at the shop and I'm swapping my set of rbs. For the new stealths. As I'm waiting on then the shop let's me know cylinder 2 and 5 are leaking. Well this is very disheartening as I planned on going port injection soon and now the money for that would have to be spent on labor and getting the head rebuilt from VAC.
But here's my dilemma. My car really wasn't even smoking. I did have a start up smoke issue as I did know my valve cover was cracked. That I planned on getting fixed now anyway. But after driving for about 5 minutes the smoking is virtually gone. Sure I have the occasional puff of smoke or wtvr. But nothing I was concerned about or even thought would be my valve stems. So my question is this.....since I really didn't notice any smoking issue with the 2 cylinders....should I say eff it and take my chances that the other cylinders won't go too causing a huge smoke issue and save the money to go with port injection as planned? Since my car is torn apart for turbo swap as it is that would mean it would only be about 14 hours extra to pull the head. But if I chance it...go port injection. And the smoking gets intolerable I will have to then redo labor as you have to take the turbos off again to remove the head so total labor would be 20+ hours down the road. I'm really torn because most likely this year I will only have the funds to do one or the other. What would some of you do if you were in my position? I am attaching a pic of cylinder 5...cylinder 2 looks pretty much the same....

According to this DIY, you don't need to pull the head to replace valve stem seals...

Replace the valve stem seals yourself. It isn't too hard to do and not overly time consuming, plus at the same time you can replace your valve cover gasket. It would be wise to do all the seals since that leak is only going to get worse then you'll end up having to tear it all down again later on to fix it. Get 'er done and have the piece of mind.

I definitely wouldn't be able to do it myself. No garage and live in apartment community. Hence why it's at a shop unfortunately. Like you say doing it would be piece of mind. But that would mean most likely no port injection this year. It's really a chance im taking of it getting worse if I don't do it

Chitown335i, So you have the money to buy and install new turbos, yet you cant even refund me the last $950 that you ripped me off on for the rb's? You dont deserve help from anyone on here. If you cant afford to fix your car everytime you have a problem you should propably not have a bmw. I have screen shots of all the texts, anyone interested can pm me.

Get them done first! And let the guy above help you out. I've made a couple of close friends while working and building this car up.
