2008 BMW 335XI Reverse issue!

Hello there!

I have a 2008 BMW 335 XI Automatic with about 84 000 KM on it and the car has issue going into reverse. When started from cold, it works but after taking the highway and driving for sometime, when put into reverse and and press pressing on gas pedal, the car starts going in reverse but when I press on the brake pedal then again on the gas pedal, it stops and I get the yello gear light and the car goes into limp mode. I don't think it occurs without me pressing on brake first while reversing. When I turn off the car then back on it, limp mode goes away but the issue is still there.

My mechanic changed the transmission fluid , it worked for some time but came back.

Has anyone had this problem? Any advice?

I get the following errors:

Immobilizer System:
CAS
Fehler: Input P N signal fault from EGS
Code: A0B1
Transmission Control:
Transmission / Getriebe GS 19
Fehler: :gear ratio
Code: 4F97
Fehler: sorry, unknown fault
Code: 4F82

I'm thinking that some EDS solenoids need changing. I'm in Canada and no one ships them here, I can only buy the full valve body.

Thanks!

I guess no one else had this issue.

I took it to a BMW mechanic and he said I have to change the transmission.

Definitely sounds like an issue in the transmission. Not sure specifically what but something to do with the engine trying to run in idle while in reverse gear so maybe its pressure or torque converter related otherwise something is broke inside.

The cost of rebuilding the transmission is 4000$ . Well there is no way it could be the solenoids? A BMW mechanic will always tell you that you have to change the transmission, the diagnostic does not consist of testing the solenoids.

What's weird is that it only happens when the car heats down, I guess it's when the transmission oil is more liquidy...

He told me that he can try changing the solenoids and see if it works, if not it's the transmission.

When buying solenoids, there is E-Shift and M-Shift kit, which one is for the E90?

Ok I bought the 7 solenoids, I will update this thread once the repairs are in case someone else gets this issue!

It sounds like a solenoid issue. I would have guessed fluid level first, but if that was changed, it's solenoids. I've had a similar issue in another car due to low fluid, basically once warmed up, it would engage reverse slowly. Not likely the transmission itself since gears engaging or not is a function of the valve body.

At least you can purchase solenoids by themselves. On my other car, the modified VB had a solenoid fail and I had to replace the entire thing since solenoids were not available individually. I see it's been a few months since initial post, did you ever fix it?

Every time I read threads like these, I'm glad I have the 6MT. Good luck!

Lucky you! Only problem is when you are in a jam ))

I had the same problem yesterday. brought the car to repair. Mechanic said he put in 3,5 liters to the gearbox and it is running fine. No leakage was spotted. Same guy did a repair of this gearbox earlier. He either may not have put enough oil then or it is leaking seemlessly somewhere...

Topic starter, have you fixed your gearbox problem?

Have you ruled out the cheaper-simple stuff first? Like it might be a break in the shifter wires which get under tension when you move the 6AT into Sport mode. You need to unwrap the tape which some how cause breaks in the communication wires UNDER the tape. There is even a DIY write up on how to relocate the wires so its no longer stressed when shifted into sport.

If it has to do with how warm the car gets I doubt wires are the issue... Still looking for answers

You may be right... But don't rule out those hard to detect breaks in the wires for the shifter hilals. It could be when cold the wires make contact and once the CABIN warms up (Not the transmission) it will show the problems due to thermal expansion?? Its a quick DIY and a mod that should be done by all 6AT folks anyway to release the shifter wire tension.

You could also have your mechanic reset the transmission module using INPA (Motor off) and then lock the car and let it sleep for 15 mins so everything resets nicely... U will notice smoother shifts if anything.

Fixed it, was the mechtronics to transmission seal. Attached a couple pics, you can see the new improved solid design, as well as the huge crack.

Right on!

Good on you for coming back to tell people, bet it will help someone.

Are the automatic transmission in these prone to odd failures?

Was just having a argument about these with a friend auto VS manual, and the intrinsic issues and modes of failure.

That's my hope, that it saves someone the month I have been working on figuring this out. The problems I have seen when searching were:

Trans fluid level, often from leaking mechtronics electrical connection.

Solenoids in the mechtronics

Weird voltage related faults/wiring/tcu

Nothing seems super common though.

Thanks tylerc. Recently had the same issue, and it turns out to be the adapter seal.

I'm surprised you never noticed all the leaking fluid on the ground where you park the car daily?
