Best Winter Tires what's your opinion?
In correlation of Winter Storm Jonas affecting the East Coast of the US, I want to know what everyone's best choice of snow tires are, let's hear em guys.

I just got a dedicated set of winter wheels/tires for both of my e90s, and went with Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s. There's a pretty exhaustive comparison on Tire Rack (HERE, there's a video if you click the right tab) of several winter tires, and these were the best for my use (have on the car throughout the entire winter, not just on when it snows).

Back in my college skiing days, I had the Hakkapeliitta 1's (yeah, I'm old), and the 10's. With eco studs (because I am one).
Today, I wonder if it really matters or not. It almost seems like they're all good? And if in doubt, Blizzak your car. Every once in a blue moon, I'll hear a car go by on dry pavement with studs. Almost always, it's a guy 60 y.o. with some sweet German car.... |

Best tire is really in the eyes of the beholder. There are tons of great options out there, just stay away from the so called "performance snow tires" if you are concerned with overall snow traction. They tend to have pretty shallow tread patterns which sucks for deep snow (but good for performance driving) and won't last you very long. The new Bridgestone Blizzak WS-80's are a great example of a good brand name tire that has deep treads, with the Blizzak LM-25s being the so called performance snows. An associate at my office just bought them and really loves them on his Lexus IS350 and turns his car into a winter tank when it snowed here. The Michelin XI3 are highly rated for hard packed snow and ice, but really struggle when trying to plow through some deep wet snow. It really depends on your own requirements but if I were in the market for new winter tires I would go with the Blizzak's WS-80's.

I've ran Blizzak WS70 winter tires for the past 3 years, and loved them a lot, I had full confidence all the time. They weren't a sport tire by any means, but for my RWD car in winter, they did the job more than adequately, I never once got stuck in the snow.
Now, a few weeks ago I had to replace my rears since they were worn out. I come to find out that the WS70's have been discontinued and replaced with the WS80's. Thinking they could only be an improvement, I purchased those without thinking twice. Now on the car, they actually are quite a different tire, and not for the better. They're far more squishy and softer in comparison to the WS70's. If I had to do it again, I'd most likely go with the Blizzak LM32's, which are a little more sport oriented winter tires, which should make the car enjoyable to drive again on dry roads.

There's no "best" tires.
They all go with what you will use them for the most. Like shoes (tirerack slogan, or used to be lol). I use Nokian Hakkappelitta R2. But I drive most city with lots of icy roads. Had I had a plowed highway commute I'd have gone with Bridgestone Blizzak or Dunlop or Pirelli. YMMV, and for the record, hardly ever will you get a proper answer for a "what's the best" question. Cheers! |

Best BUDGET tire? General Altimax Artic. Pretty freaking darn good.
But it's a little late no?

You can bump the psi up a bit. That will restore a bit of feel, but still, it won't be the same. |

Good thing I had my snows on...today I had to back the 335i out of the garage to take the snowblower out and run it...expecting 12-16"...it could have been tricky with the re050a's...

Sounds too skinny? I know skinny is better in snow and on ice, but IMHO 225/40-18 or 225/45-17 is more optimal, when it's dry at least there's some contact...which is why I don't think yours is best ever..
