N54 engine glory holes. Every stud performs best after letting off some steam. :-)

I maybe wrong but I think they are just left over from the early design when BMW (M in fact) actually tried to channel air flow through the fenders, but realized they didnt actually work. They didnt put any body air vents, but didnt bother sealing those holes.
