Oil filter collapsing??
Hi all, should I be worried about this? I've never seen my oil filter in this kind of shape after an oil change. I typically go 5-7k miles. This was after only 5k miles. The car received a new oil pan gasket in September which included an oil change and new oil filter by the shop. Why would the filter be bent out of shape??
Currently at 125k miles

Hmmmm..maybe time to reduce oil change interval. Maybe running to thick of an oil in colder temp weather.. Maybe it wasn't changed at the time of the gasket and oil change? Could be a number of reasons. How does it look as far as being clogged or filled with particulates?

If they used a non-oem filter, my guess is too tall and crushed when cap was screwed on. Aftermarket filters fit 400 cars, some better than others. Is the cage it slides onto still in the cap? If not, that's a whole other issue.

It's possible that they did not change the oil filter as part of the oil pan job, even though I supplied it, but I would be surprised if they did not do so. My OCI are always about 5 to 7k miles since I had the car at 38k miles, currently have 125k miles.

Maybe I should get a new oil filter housing cap part just to rule that out?

I would think either the filter twisted when the cap was being installed, or the filter was mashed when being pushed down into the oil filter housing.
I would install a new filter, torque the cap down, then remove it immediately to see if the filter has twisted or collapsed. If it looks good, reinstall the cap. Repeat in a week and see what the results are. |

Check out my thread from a while ago, same exact thing.. Previous owner sucked balls IMO, and OCI were probably about 10-15k miles if not more..

It's normal, that idiot (mechanic) grabbed it from the center and squished it instead of holding it from top, try to put one yourself and it will come out fine
