Talked to my friend, he said they cleaned out the tank and lines, replaced the HPFP, fuel filter and heater. They used some sort of testing equipment to verify that the injectors were ok and did not replace them. He said after all work was done the vehicle worked even better than before. Total cost was 4k.

I would think you could file a claim against her insurance company and have it taken care of.

OP stated in his original post that insurance was already covering it, he was just checking on the validity of the $14K quote.

Even $4K is outrageous.... All that needed to be done was new fuel filter and suck out the tank to get rid of the unleaded gas.
I used to work for VW, and more than one occasion stupid porters would go fill up diesel vehicles with unleaded gas.
We would remove interior bits to get to fuel tank access cover, drop in a line and use an inline pump to suck out the fuel.
Get some fresh diesel in there and swap out the fuel filter; drive it around a bit or let it run outside the shop for a while, and back on the sales lot it went! Lmao

I'm assuming you stopped working at VW before 2009. After that, gas in the new TDI's high pressure fuel pump would cause it to grenade, sending metal shavings throughout the fuel system and engine, causing a heck of a lot more damage and work than your describing, or what was required in my 2005 Jetta TDI.

Garage List
Same problem with my 1999 Jetta TDI, babysitter filled it with gasoline, she paid to drain the tank, flush the lines, replace filter, $300 and it was trouble free after that. Before spending $14k it would make sense to drain the tank, fill with diesel, crack the lines at the injectors, flush, and maybe you're good to go. In the 335d in order to crack the lines at the injectors you have to remove the intake manifold which takes a couple hours, and then 2 more to reinstall. Figure 4 hours to drain the tank and flush, $400, and 4 to remove and reinstall the manifold, total $800 plus maybe a filter. I don't understand why gasoline would cause permanent damage for only a couple seconds of operation through the pump / injectors.

I own my d, but my wife's filled it up once or twice (not often, since it goes 450+ miles per tank). She even knows to look for the biodiesel sticker on the pump and drive away if she sees it.

Interesting that the insurance companies over there will cover for it. I'm in Australia and insurance companies refused to cover any mechanical damage unless it was damaged due to a collision.

No movement yet. The insurance agent hasn't been to the dealer get to finalize the claim. I'll be giving them a call tomorrow. This x3 28i is not enough! I miss the torque monster!

Just found this thread while searching for something concerning gauges. I just got an estimate from BMW for gas in my D. 24k per sb. It's crazy.

Just get another car. Way less than having the repairs done at the dealer.
