Hello all,

I got into my car this morning and felt that it was running very rough immediately after starting it-- inconsistent idle speed, moderate vibration etc. I shut it down and started it back up again only to feel the same shaking. No SES light yet.

I pulled out of the driveway normally and noticed that the whole car was vibrating like crazy at low engine speeds, and applying throttle made the issue much worse. At this point the SES light came on.

Continuing to drive around town for a little while, I noticed a few additional symptoms: 1) car feels like it has reduced power. 2) attempting to accelerate from low RPM's produces the most noticeable vibration/shake. 3) the above described shaking almost completely disappears at ~4000 RPM.

I have a code reader, but a family member has it today and will not be home until the evening. In the mean time I am pondering potential issues. Spark plugs were replaced a few hundred miles ago so I think ignition coils are next. Any thoughts?

there is a chance that one of your cylinders is not working.
do you smell fuel out of the exhaust. i would check by pulling your plugs to see if any of them are wet with fuel. if that is the case, it would be cause by ignition coil or plugs.
i would have suggested not to drove too much let a lone rev it up to 4k, i would have suggested if you have to, to keep it under 2k. but ideally not to drive it.

Without the ability to pull codes, my first step would be to clean your MAF sensor and then check/replace your air filter.

Do NOT drive it.

Your DISA valve may be broken and debris may have found their way to the valves.

I had a bad coil give me those exact symptoms.

Most likely a coil but can also be a dirty injector. Test the coils and find out. Unplug one at a time and see if any changes in rmps. I believe there is a video on youtube...

I am still on original coils at 130K miles.

Update: Code was P0302, Cylinder 2 misfire. Replacing all 6 coils completely eliminated the issue and I was able to clear the SES light. Thanks for the input everybody!

Mind sharing what kind of scanner you have that was able to pull the code? Ordinary one or BMW specific? Curious because I recently purchased a Craftsman OBDII scanner.

Standard OBDII, nothing BMW specific. I could get you the manufacturer tomorrow but I don't remember off the top of my head. But my scanner is nothing special and worked well enough to tell me that I indeed had the suspected misfire
