Vert owners - Rust above windscreen?
So I was giving the roof system a good clean yesterday, getting rid of any green etc. all so I could prep it with some gummi pflege and I came across the bubbling in the pics attached. It's on the edge above the windscreen where the roof locks in.
In my mind rust = car cancer and for a 4 year old car this is not good. Do any other vert owners have anything like this? I fear I am going to have to have a head on battle with BMW to get this sorted. I thought these things weren't meant to rust for years! I rang my local dealer, but the guy seemed clueless. Going to see him tomorrow anyway, but don't hold much hope. It's a little saddening as everything else about the car is perfect. I even took it to a detailer for a quote and they said the paintwork needs very little correction. |

Check the terms of the corrosion and more importantly perforation warranty. I had a huge fight 2years in total with VW (dealer I and family had bought many cars from, U.K. Head office and Germany direct) with my last car over rust caused by a design fault thy would not admit to or take any responsibility for repairing just poorly judged good willed gestures that were insulting got me so annoyed and fed up with it all I cut my losses had an accepted fair and decent trade in value by BMW and drove off in my AUC e91. VW would not even have the car as a trade in as it was rusting even tho it was their issue lol.

As long the car it's inspections done you should be able to make a claim. I know it shouldn't matter but if you have full BMW history it should help.
I had a rust problem on a VW and no questions asked, work done asap. |

That's poor - that's not even a place where you'd get stone chips or anything. If it was the top of the surround, I could potentially sympathize with them, but not there.
I'd say get it booked in. From memory, there is a 10 year warranty on rust / perforation. |

I don't plan on paying myself lol. I expect the job cost will be very expensive, especially for the paint match! |

Shouldn't be that expensive. Grind off rust, seal, filler, sand, paint the "windscreen" frame the factory color, done. Few hundred quid my guess. But still should be free under warranty. Bmw takes rust prevention seriously.

Fingers crossed they sort it out. On another note, how's the DCT box? I maybe going down the M3 route myself (not sure of the vert) but I'm really wanting a manual. I had a test drive in a manual M4 and loved it but I prefer the V8... However it's hard enough finding a decent spec M3 DCT let alone a manual as 9/10 cars are DCT!!! Still happy with the DCT? Any regrets?

The DCT is great. The choice should depend on what you plan to use it for IMO. If it's a Sunday car a manual might not be a bad idea, but if you use it a lot and spend time in traffic the DCT is a real no brainer. I do miss the MT a little bit but not a lot to be honest, and when you have the DCT up at 8300rpm and shift the brutalness of it is epic, something the MT does not have. |

Did you buy it brand new? Any accident history or previous repairs to that area?

How does that even happen? Isn't the whole chassis dipped into various liquids to prevent rusting during manufacturing? So in order for rust to happen, it would need to get through the clear coat, paint and primer, no? Unless the roof is rubbing in that area only and over time removes the paint causing rust?

This kind of defect would indicate some sort of failure in that process. It looks like its bubbled from under the paint |

Got this fixed and the paint job looks pretty decent as far as I can tell so far.
That's more than can be said for their care and attention to the rest of the vehicle. Shadow line trim has been bent and the a door seal is hanging off! I think I will run this one outside of warranty when the time comes. Fucking main dealers stress me out. I wasn't going to complain about them using over 1/4 of a tank of fuel while it was in (it had service work too) because I couldn't be arsed with the stress! |
