It's cool bro, you tried. Modding cars isn't for everyone...
Good one. Score: 1-0 Internet Warriors.

OP- As others have said, hit it with some penetrating oil beforehand if you're really concerned. Worst case, keep the mig on standby if needed. Goodluck and let us know how it goes if you tackle the job yourself.

Why are folks removing and replacing the studs on the cylinder head if they're not damaged? I thought only the manifold nuts needed to be replaced. My studs remained on the cylinder head except two that came off with the nuts while removing my turbos. I'm putting the two studs back after removing the nuts. TIS and Bentley manual both do not mention removing and replacing the studs.

What a dick comment. If his stud broke at a place where there wasn't enough exposed thread to use that trick, how else would you suggest to do it? You're clearly an expert. Let's hear what you would do if the stud broke off. If you're going to be a smartass, at least figure out what you're talking about first.

About 1/2 of my studs came out with the nuts. And the studs also came with my turbo install kit as well.

I just ordered the stock turbo replacement. My wastegates are loose to the point of no return so i opted for a set of fresh turbos.

I've done a bit of research from the bentley manual and forums and i think i'm pretty well prepared to get this job done. I do, however, have a few questions/concerns...

1. I'm really worried about the condition of the exhaust manifold bolts/studs on my car. I was under there yesterday and those guys are looking pretty rusty (i live in new england btw). Has anyone broken these guys off in the head and had to deal with extraction or are they usually more compliant than they look? I'm worried that if i break one off, i'm going to have to take the head off to extract them. I'd really really like to be able to do this job in a weekend.

2. How long realistically does this job take? I'm a fairly expierenced shade tree mechanic. I'm planning on doing this in my garage on jack stands. I have an XI and i'm also replacing the oil pan gasket so i'm going to have to deal with dropping the front diff and pan. I'm thinking a friday, saturday and sunday would be more than enough time if i'm starting early and staying organized?

Thanks in advance! I'll be sure to get some pictures up once i get this job underway.
Use Kroil oil and soak for a day. You will have no issues.

Best stuff money can buy. Bar none.

I'm in the middle of turbos, oil pan gasket and motor mount replacement. it is a lot of work! insane amount of work. well I'm a beginner so yea it's tough but sure ain't paying 1,500$ in labor. 3 full days should be good. I'm about 6 hrs in and got everything off except for turbos but I'm definitely taking my time. good luck

Welding a nut to a stud is a standard repair in the LS world. Surprised it's blowing everyone's mind here. Then again, the materials used on the BMW seem to generally be of better quality than the GM crap I work on. Good luck with the project, I may be doing this soon as well.
