Needing helg identifying "clonking" sound from rear axle. E91
Hello,
This is my first post on this forum, if this question already has been asked before (and answered) please help me finding it. I have an E91 from -06, lately i recognised a "clonking" sound from the right back wheel. It appears when braking and accelerating quickly. I removed the wheel and identifying two bushings looking old and worn out. Do you guys think this is the problem or is it something else? Please see attached photos. In addition to your subframe bushings being shot, there is a strong likelihood your differential bushings are in the same condition. Worn differential bushings can produce the clunking sound you are experiencing. It would be wise to have the four subframe bushings replaced in addition to your three differential bushings.

I had a look on RealOEM, and from what I can see there are four subframe bushings (No 3 and No 2). Which are the differential bushings? is it No 14 and 11? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=33_1351 Thanks for your help. |

These subframe bushings are beaten to death, they need to be replaced. You may also look into cleaning and protecting the subframe itself, it looks like it starts to rust.

I have an '08 and my rear subframe has about the same rust issues being here in the NE, just redid the suspension with B8s/H&R Sports, while I was in there I covered most of the subframe in a wax based lubricant. I think that is a pretty good option.

Initial thought was a destroyed upper shock mount in the rear (I had mine fail). However if it's only when accelerating and decelerating and not over bumps, then it shouldn't be the case.
I think you're on the right track with subframe bushings + possible diff bushings |

Late update: I manufactured a tool with a pipe with a threaded rod and changed the subframe bushings. I didnt change the diff bushings.
Result was a quiet ride! |
