I too just adjusted mine today. Well I started last weekend but I couldn't find my long 1/4" extension so I took today off. Also Changed my vacuum lines next up installing the pump, downpipes, swaybar, steering rack and test. I also found a wooden washer and shimmed the back turbo actuator behind the cir clip. I'll update l8r with pictures I took. Man what a b*tch this is. A huge Thanks to JamesM3M5 for showing us the way. If I'm ever in VA I'll buy you a case of beers.

OP,

When you finished, did your WG shaft have any play left? Mine has just the smallest amount still, but its REALLY close to perfect compared to how it was.
How bad was you front wastegate out of adjustment?

Correct, assuming you're not out of the 82k mile recall limit.

I'm not saying they will always replaced the turbos, but in some cases they do. They are replacing mine.

Quite a bit! There was plenty of threads left to adjust more, but I was turning it a few times and trying to mock up the final location again to test. I wasn't about to install those 3 m6 nuts again only to find out it wasn't enough. I got super close and called it good. We'll see.

Well my rattle is gone, woohoo but I know have random misfires. trying to figure it out. As for the M6 bolts, I installed one and checked then adjusted and the second time it was perfect.

So, a new WGA? does BMW sell the WGA separately from the turbo?

I didn't notice any appreciable play in the WG shaft before or after adjustment. Thankfully, since that's a death knell for the whole turbo.

Glad to help. Stop by the shop any time you're around.

They do, about $40-50 each, but they're not in the parts catalog. You either have to search in the forums here for them (I can't remember them off the top of my head), or call the dealer and talk with a parts guy who knows what the hell you're talking about. They are listed on a service bulletin, not the ETK.

Fixed my misfire issue, stupid me mixed up my front o2 sensors. I have to say that I now have absolutely NO RATTLE, I agree that it may be a temp fix but it keeps me sane for the time being. RB's or something in the future.

On the way home in mexico I met with a Lexus ISF, he had 3 car lengths on the jump, reeled him in and put some serious distance on him. All in All this work was worth the time.

This repair worked an additional 25k+ miles and 22 months until the WG shaft play became too great and one or both would begin to bind causing boost lag then overshoot.

Got new ones from my warranty company since I was just past the 82k BMW replacement warranty. Tip: Anyone looking to buy a used 335i (or ANY BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc) get it from Carmax and get their extended warranty. Best company ever to buy a car from, and best aftermarket warranty coverage by far, and completely affordable. Carmax will even finance the extended warranty into your payment. First major repair on one of these more modern cars outside warranty work - such as water pump + thermostat, leaking steering rack, VANOS problem, bad turbo(s), etc - is going to be at least $1000-1500 easily, much more in metropolitan areas!

After doing some research I am positive the wastegates are causing the issue I am having. I did the downpipes and the rattling started to become evidentn wasnt having any issues but now it sounds like the wastegates are closing and opening when I am holding a consistent throttle. Which I feel like causes the car to have a very unsteady throttle response. Also, during our logging session we noticed that there was a boost onset issue. When you would shift from 3rd to 4th it would basically stall for like 3 seconds and then boost would come on fully to where we had it set at with no issues pulling throughout the rpm range. I would see it happening in 4th to 5th also. But sometimes it wouldn't happen and it would pull like a freight train with boost hitting targeted levels instantly after every shift. My main concern is the daily driving and how inconsistent it feels with a jittery pulsing here and there when I am holding a consistent throttle. It just sounds like the wastegates aren't opening/closing or functioning properly. I am going to be performing exactly what was done in the beginning of this thread to see if that will solve anything with a buddy of mine who is very mechanically inclined. Sorry for the long post, but this seemed like a thread where I would get positive feedback from members on here experiencing the same issue. Instead of starting my own, thanks!
