World's longest race track to be built in Nevada

The track is expected to be at least 15 miles making it longer than the Nürburgring's 13.1 miles.

Hmph. Outside of Pahrump ... so you'll have this on one side of town, and the Chicken Ranch on the other ...

... and comparing this to the Nuerburgring is like comparing the Notre Dame to pretty much any newfangled Southern megachurch ...

... but hey: now that Vegas has a major pro sports team, I guess anything's possible out thataways in the open desert. Good luck hosting track days this time of year out there, though. Tires shall melt ...

Shadows? Will there be pesky, yet thrilling, shadows?

Yeah, I don't do summer tracks days in the desert. Been meaning to try out Chuckwalla, but I think Feb-March might be the right time frame. I've met John Morris (SMMR owner) a few times...interesting guy. Flies his helicopter to the track. He gave me a blistering, brutal ride around the circuit in a V-8 Radical that I'll never forget. That thing is close in speed to an LMP2 car. Yikes!

A 15-mile track is going to need a lot of corner workers.

Of course, the full Nürburgring circuit is rarely used these days. I suspect it's partly because spectators don't want to wait ten minutes to see the leaders pass.

The full course at Miller Motorsports Park (now Utah Motorsports Campus) was just under five miles, and even it proved a little too long.

And who exactly will want to stand in the sun all damn day on a track that will surely see surface temps of 140-plus degrees F? No one with money, that's for sure ...

The owner will need to hire track girls (from Chicken Ranch? :: ducking :: ) to hold umbrellas for the corner workers!

Doesn't sound anything like a race track. More like a business venture to pull in rich people. A hotel, high class homes, restaurants.....

Honestly, it's going to be something for the rich to play on and I hope it tanks. Awesome idea but bad location and completely going in the wrong direction for potential.

Having driven quite a bit around both Nevada and Western Germany, I can say that aside from both being on the same planet, there's really nothing else I can think of that they share. Big with no undulation, scenery or history is just sort of a waste.

The 'Ring is dripping in history, and even blood, Pahrump has a scene in Mars Attacks. Pass.

BMW has a desert track. Not very long. But in the summer hot as hell.

Despite Palm Springs' attempts to take credit for it, it's in Thermal, a town whose name says everything you need to know.

Having been to MMP/UMC, I agree. It takes a while to even learn the basics of a track, and a longer track like that of course takes longer, and also becomes more and more difficult to remember, especially when you start getting into the nuances.

15 miles? Ugg.
