4: mgb with stebro exh
6: still conflicted between N52 and S54 although big Healy is nice too
I'll have to get back to on the rest

EDIT: 12: 1960s F1 Matra. Sweetest engine I ever heard.

V12: the 3 liter Tipo 168/62 from the Ferrari 250 GTO and Testarossa. Small displacement V12 are just amazing...

You can hear it here:

V8 biturbo from the Ferrari F40 Le Mans race car, driven by Formula one legend Jacques Laffite (with loafers!): there's a lot to learn here on how to properly drive: the quickness of the upshifts, the perfectly rev-matched downshifts and the calm hands ;-). How he upshifts to 4th gear at 2:45 is simply incredible.

The F1 engines sounded even better but I'm having a hard time finding a good sound clip. In the meantime here is the Matra V12 in LeMans trim.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Subaru WRX STI boxer engine for 4 cylinder?! I will always have a soft spot for it as it was THE car to get when I got my driving licence - the Colin McRae shape.

Great choice. When I had my STi and was deep into those cars, I knew guys who put equal length headers on (bye bye boxer grumble) and took them off again just to get the grumble back. I know I loved the sound -- as long as it wasn't too riced out with stupid exhaust tricks!

TBH when people reviewed the 4cyl Cayman and compared the sound to a Subaru, I don’t think it was a compliment. They do have a disctinct sound though.

Shazz wdb : As an owner of a 718 Cayman and a former owner of a WRX, I can say definitively that they sound very little like each other, particularly off idle. The 718 fours sound more like an air-cooled 911, actually -- and revved up on the track, they sound more like a Ducati (yes, I've heard all firsthand, and recently.)

Every single flat-4 Porsche has ever made sounds better than any flat-4 Subaru has ever made. Bank on it.

I really convinced myself I was going to get a new Cayman or CPO Cayman S. I love how they look and the interior is very nice. I did end up going with a Corvette though.

Think the word "brutal" best describes these two engines. While the BRM V16 was before my days attending F1 races, it must have been wonderful to hear a 1.5 liter super charged 16 cylinder being driven in anger.

I saw (and heard) the Matra 3.0 liter V12 a good number of times. You could tell it was coming way before you saw it...nothing else in the field sounded like it. You felt it as much as heard it.

If we're talking other brutal sounding F1 engines, I'd have to include the BRM 3.0 liter H16 and as mentioned before, Honda's RA300...which I was lucky enough to stand near enough in the pits to watch the tach blip to close to 12,000 rpm.
and if it's the sweetest sounding F1 engine, for me, it was the 1965 Ferrari 1.5 liter flat 12.

The BRM V-16 is very unique and brutal sounding. At WOT the sound is scary and carries on for miles
