Yeah, not really necessary anymore. There are some who use 56k....but that's generally only because they may not have high-speed available at their location. Yes, it's still out there....just not nearly as common as it used to be. Rural areas and whatnot.

DirecWAY

i used it years ago because we didn't have fiberoptics setup yet from my cable company and my house was .5 mi to far for DSL from the phone company's CO.

Its alright, was way better than 56k. After that crap for 6 months got cable.

some places dont have dsl or cable. i would prefer cable at my house but i can't get it because my house wasn't prewired. i can only get dsl and its pretty slow compared to my cable at my apartment. only good thing about dsl at home is that its not static ip address...whereas my cable is static.

Yeah DSL is pretty slow too, we should change the disclaimer to DSL beware.

Some houses like my mom's have dial up, so it's still somewhat applicable nowadays.

So wire it up! what's the problem?

I wired up my parents house with a 4 port router located in the basement under the ceiling like shelf. And brought about 3 100 ft and one 50 foot Cat5 spool of wire from a local computer show sale for about $75.
Topped off with a wi-fi router for the laptops in the house.
