I was always under the impression the rear tails were sealed and could not be opened without cutting and JB welding the thing back together? I had this problem and ended up replacing the whole damn assembly.

My driver's side outer just failed too.. 2008 e90.

Do the LCIs just plug n play, or do i have to break out the solderer!?

I have an e92 pre-lci and the light bars in my outside passenger side taillight aren't working. I figure since they're all lit up by different LED's and they all stopped working at once, it must be a connection issue.

I've tried finding info on it but I can't find much on here that's simple enough for an electrical novice like me to understand and I really don't want to have to buy a new assembly. Anyone have ideas?

Weird how e92/e93 are LED's and E90 are just incandescent bulbs. They really don't look any different either.

From what I learned throughout this ordeal, it is indeed a connection issue, but NOT a plug-and-play connection (read: not an issue with the harness or associated pins/connectors). I have heard speculation that there is a soldered connection that fails, resulting in the LEDs not functioning. Whether or not you want to open your assembly to investigate is up to you.

However, I will say that my replacement assembly did not fail and, IIRC, had a different part number then the original. It is possible that this issue was addressed in an updated part. For me, it was worth the ~$175 for the new light assembly rather than the headache of a DIY electrical fix.

Well, I figure I can find someone with soldering tools and a curious mind like me to break open the assembly and see what's wrong. Thanks for the info. If it doesn't work out, I'll just have to buy a new assembly.

If you decide to tear into it, keep us updated! Seems like this is a relatively common issue with pre-LCI cars, unfortunately.

Sorry for rezzing this post but before creating one of my own I would like to ask if there is anyone out there that knows of a proper DIY guide with at least photos of the repair process for these E92 prelci tail light assemblies.

I've got two full sets of pre lci tails, one left rear that was impacted lost its red panel but has functioning LEDs and another left rear that has malfunctioning LEDs.. If there is not a proper guide then I will start a new post detailing the assembly dismantle and full repair process in my case. I've done a few days of research on the topic and have only come across posts missing images or requiring you to contact the OP. Which is not always helpful. (In my case, not helpful at all)

Cheers

I have noticed that my E92 pre-LCI tail light LED part is also flickering. Any updates on DIY? No photos? Would be interesting to see whats inside those lamps.
