New to NJ/NYC from Chicago, questions about emission and registration

Hey guys,

Just recently moved to NYC from Chicago. Now that everything else is settled down, I need to figure out the best way to get my car and the bike registered.

I can either register the car to my NYC address, where the car is kept during the summer, or NJ, where my in-laws are located and where the bike is stored at the moment. The question is that which state has a more relaxed emission test. I am currently running a single turbo setup with a fully catless exhaust. Any tips, suggestions are much welcomed

Thanks in advance!

In NJ you have to get emissions inspection every two years, no safety inspection. In NY you have to get both done annually. Someone else can answer where it would be easier.

I would register the car in NJ. Then find a guy that will give you a good inspection sticker. Or figure out how to use the down pipe fix. YOu need to be able to pass OBD2 scan. Go in the Facebook group East coast E9x they will help you out.

Any idea if they allow just one monitor to fail? IL allows just one, so I was able to get back with a non ready cat in the past.

They do allow one to fail but it can't be the catalytic converter.

if that's the case, I might just be better off getting it registered at NY unless I can find some "help" with the emission test at NJ. Fiddling with the dpfix is just too much of a headache for me.

Other components of the car is in tiptop shape, so it will have no problem passing the safety inspection, unless they poke under the hood and the undercarriage, which is obviously not stock and lack any sort of cat.

I'm ST and passed NJ inspection with a custom flash as well. Cost me $60 for inspection at an independent shop.

In NYS, you are allowed to fail 1 readiness monitor.
You can't have window tints on the front two windows.

If you find a inspection shop to hook you up ie. doesn't care about tints or if you have cel. Then you're gold.

With MHD I'm fully catless I pass every year without a problem.

There is only 1 inspection (emissions) that's needed to be done annually..

The safety inspection they do at the same time as emissions.

Inspection's cost ~$40+tax for NY Metropolitan Area.

Most inspections shops in NYC won't even care to check your brakes, taillights etc..
An inspection generally takes me <15mins if mechanic isn't busy.

Personally I think NY is easier to get away with than NJ. I've heard in NJ they use sniffers on tailpipes, or they go underneath the car and check for catalysts, YMMV.

Someone just told me that the NJ State Inspection center only checks for OBII ready. They don't check for tints or anything else. You are in and out in like 10 minutes. I know there are number of NJ shops that will pass inspection as long as you are OBII ready.

I’ve passed catless in NY, NJ and CT. All have similar checks, they’re supposed to do visual but most rely just on whatever the OBD says. All allow 1 N/A or failure. I’ve passed using both tunes and o2 sims. NY is annoying because of safety and u have these local idiot gas station shops trying to sell you on bs work. NJ DMV is nice because it’s emissions only (and free) but they do have cameras on the ground you drive over. But those operators rarely pay attention to the tv’s and go straight to OBD readings. You can always go to a private shop and pay few bucks more...
