My bad, I just noticed that you have a diesel, oil burners may well have a mechanical water pump

Some engines have an electronic pump as an auxiliary water pump along with the main belt driven water pump. A guy at work has a 2007 320d that has an aux water pump, it died and he been running with just the belt driven pump for years with no I'll effects. Mines a 59 plate (LCI) but with M57 diesel and mine has an aux electronic pump.

UPDATE:
Went for a bit of a spirited drive the other day and got a warning message saying coolant level too low!! I thought to myself, okay sorted must be a leak then. Opened the expansion tank and the coolant is still full right to the top. Thoughts? Air in the system? I've bled the system like a million times though. Could there be a leak thats letting air into the system? If so, shouldn't I be losing coolant? Its booked in on Monday at BMW, but if it turns out not to be the thermostat I'll get whacked, I'd rather sort it before then if I can. |

As rasa said, stick needs to pop up so the line on the stick is level with the top of the expansion tank. If the water is near the top you have too much water. If the water level is ok, you could have a faulty coolant level sensor. They do go bad.
How was the coolant temp when you put the fan on hot, did it still go down? |

My coolant level seems to be ok too. I got up to 91c on the way home - but, the air vents were cool in particularly the centre right vent.
I have bought a new thermostat from bmw, but I don't think it's this now...! I'm a bit confused 🤬 |

I didn't know there was such a thing as too much coolant! The indicator for max level shows the dipstick sticking out of the water fully. |

In any case even if I have too much coolant, I should't get a warning for low coolant surely!?
I've stopped monitoring the temperature lately because last few times I checked it, it would get to 70ish and then it would really go much higher than that. Saying that the heating seems to be a lot better than before but still not blowing as hot as it should |

My temps were all over the place so the car kept on going into limp mode thinking it was going to overheat. Took around 10 minutes to change as you need to be a bit gentle with it. Does your fan constantly run? |

I haven't noticed the fan running at all to be honest. Is there anyway to tell if the coolant temp sensor is knackered? If not, I guess at £30 it makes sense rather than pay BMW £100 to tell me its knackered lol

It could be a blockage in air matrix. Saw this guide on you tube. Not BMW but same principle. Will probable use deionised water or compressed air and some tubing though. I think this could well be the problem..
Will hopefully fix the heater blowing cold air, Last edited by Nel2014; 02-07-2019 at 10:48 AM.. |

Would have been more obvious if we had a gauge for it! Not sure where it's located on the M/N57 engines, have a search on newtis as it should have a guide. |

Nope not yet! So the car was booked in yesterday. They called me back saying they need another hour to diagnose the issue. They're saying they checked the concentration of coolant and it's more water than anti-freeze and they rebled they system but the heating is still not warm enough.
I have asked them if they started by checking the themostat (because thats the reason why it was booked in) and if so, how they go about diagnosing a thermostat problems seeing as that it doesn't show up on the OBDII. She hasn't given me a clear cut answer and it's still with them. Is there any advice anyone can give me on how they should be diagnosing the stat? Also, shouldn't the first point after testing the thermostat to do a pressure test on the cooling system rather than faffing about with my coolant concentration? Even by her own admission that neither here nor there so they are wasting diagnostic time on silly things while I am racking up a massive bill |

This is exactly why I said I would take it off the car and they could test it on the bench. Instead they insisted on checking it on the car.
