M3 Rear End Swap, 15” Conversion *Progress*

Hey guys, not sure if anyone out there has attempted to do this, but I’m looking for some help with my current build. My 335is I recently replaced the m3 rear end with, along with adding solid subframe bushings and poly diff bushings. So everything about the swap worked great, everything bolted up as expected. However I’m looking to convert the wheels to fit 15” wheels and I attempted to add the rotor from an x1 28i and brake calipers from an e90 328i. That did not work as the knuckle/hub is hitting the m3 “knuckle” lower rear toe arm. I swapped those m3 knuckles with my original 335is knuckle, and found online from a post on 1 Addicts that I needed adjustable toe arms so I have Rouge Engineering Toe arms that will be delivered in the mail tomorrow. The only issue I have now is that the x1 28o rotors do not fit over the parking shoe. I bought even a cheap e90 328i rotor set from a local auto parts store down the street to see if those would fit, still no luck. Has anyone ever done or heard of someone that has possibly found a solution to this, or have any insight as to how to solve this issue? I’m drawing blanks besides having a custom rotor made or attempting to convert the parking shoe to a smaller one. Thanks for looking.

You need rotors from e91 328i because is 300mm rotor made to fit over the larger parking brake. e90, e92 and e93 328i have 300mm rotor for smaller parking brake.

So update for you guys. Last night after fighting with working on 2 other cars in the middle of mine I managed to get the rear knuckles on and control arms to fit. Had to add adjustable toe arms by rouge engineering simply because the rear toe arm knuckle was hitting the inside of the wheel. As for the rotor situation, I did end up ordering the wrong year x1 28i rotors (2016 instead of 2014) However I did not realize that until I order another set of e90 328i rotors which were a direct fit as well. This was not the case for me, and the 328i rotors didn’t fit either. They were (same issue as x1 28i rotors) hitting the parking shoes. Determined to find an answer I went digging more into more forums and found 1 guy who had suggested to use e39 528i rotors which may possibly fit.
I went to my local auto parts store and bought a set and lone behold, they were a perfect fit. Test fitted the 15” wheels last night and there’s no issues with hitting any control arms, calipers, or dust shield. (I basically cut off mostly all of the dust shield with tin snips) New tires and wheels were mounted today and either tomorrow or Monday I will have the 328 calipers on, have them bled, and adjust the toe arms as straight as possible before bringing to alignment shop. More pictures incoming when I have free time these next couple days.

Another update, ended up having a dead battery and bad speed sensor on the rear from the m3 donor rear end. Replaced those but in the mean time I put the wheels on the car. As soon as I started the car and started moving out the driveway, the rear sway bar toe link connections on both sides took all the balancing weights on the wheels right off and started grinding into the wheels. Sick. Spent some time filing down the toe links and realized this was a bad idea and that the geometry of the car will be changed and handling will be compromised. Ordered adjustable toe links from turner Motorsports and they will be in tomorrow. More updates incoming, doesn't drive but at least she looks good.

Isn't it ironic that your plate is laughing at M's and yet you're spending all this time putting M parts into your car?

Haha couldn't agree more. I'm just a wannabe M car at this point.
But no one will look at this car and say," wow that looks like he has a lot of M3 parts on it"
Considering everyone probably thinks Im wasting my time lol. The norm isn't for me.

Finally finished with the swap, after hours or replacing parts and replacing a wheel bearing that was faulty on the donor rear ended we finally have lift off and it feels amazing. Worth the hassle and money to have her on the road.
