MD State Inspection with ABS, Traction, Brake Lights (Trifecta)
Hey all,
A quick question before running to an inspection site for a car I have picked recently. Unfortunately the car seems to have ABS pump motor / module failure and I will have to DIY it soon but was wondering if it is safe to get it inspected without failing? Technically, 4 wheel braking system works without an issue, and Ive seen threads stating that as well. If someone with actual experience of getting inspection done w ABS light on, any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance! Last edited by sprp85; 01-03-2020 at 07:54 AM.. |

I had no luck
It has been my unfortunate experience dealing with this on. I didn't pass with the light on, then got it passed with the light off. The light came back on in between initial inspection and emissions. The inspection station would not even check the emissions with the light on.

So you had all (3) Lights? (ABS, Traction & Brake illuminated in yellow) Also, State Inspection includes emission? I thought emission was a separate requirement that requires a visit to a VEIP station? Thanks again ! |

You will NOT pass MD State inspection OR emissions with any type of CEL on the dash.
Yes, they are two separate inspections. If the light is off when you go through State inspection and does not trigger during the inspection, you are fine. If it comes on, immediate failure. You will have 30 days to fix it under that inspection station, otherwise you wasted your time and money. If you clear your codes through emissions, they will know. You need to put miles on the car before the emissions are in "ready" state. |

The two inspections are separate tasks and the timing of mine just didn't work out with my fault. I tried going to emissions inspection and they didn't even bother hooking it up. I failed all inspections when I went with the ABS light on. |

Just a follow upto my own question, in case some may wonder in the future.
ABS light does not affect your MD State Inspection result, as long as you have physically safe functioning brakes. I did fail at my first attempt due to low rear rotor thickness. To reiterate, unless the warning lights are SES/CEL of some sort, you will pass. |
