Camera Bag
Hey,
Been shopping around for a new camera and thought I'd ask around here "What camera bag do you guys use?" Thanks, |

I have quite a few camera bags, depending on what gear I'm bringing along. My most favorite is by Crumpler. They make a 6 Million Dollar Home bag which is very comfortable and user friendly. They make a few different styles that you can find on Amazon.

Generally for me all the big brands are equivalent. I'd suggest assembling what you think you'd go out shooting with (body, lens attached, perhaps another to swap, perhaps filters, water bottle, granola bars?) and then get the bag that is just barely big enough to fit. Find a store with the actual bags on display if possible and just get the one that seems best for your needs. Otherwise, if you're like me, you'll end up w/ something too small or too big and be forever slightly annoyed by it.

I have a Lowepro Slingshot 100, which was good when I didn’t have much gear, but got an Incase DSLR Pro last year. It’ll hold two bodies, 4 lenses, laptop and various filters, cables, batteries and remotes with ease, but it’s frickin’ heavy when fully loaded. It doesn’t scream camera bag which makes me feel a bit better when traveling.

Depending on where I’m going and the size kit that I need, I have a Tenba Shootout rolling backpack, LowePro AWII 450 and Timbuk2 messenger bag with Snoop insert.

When using a camera bag, I use a 30 liter Jansport daypack. It works for 35mm, medium format and large format film gear. I use a bag only when on photo hikes or bike rides with 35mm or medium format, and any time I use the large format system.
My normal rig is a 35mm body loaded with film, and one lens. Carried with wrist or shoulder strap, no bag. |

I use an old Maxpedition Mongo messanger bag w/ a 3-compartment camera bag insert (similar to the one picture, but more padded and in black). I don't like camera bags that look like camera bags. Depending on where I'm going and what else I'm bringing, I'll use the same camera bag insert in a Maxpedition, Blackhawk, or TNF backpack.
I can fit a full frame dSLR body w/ a mounted lens + 2 addt'l lenses in the camera bag insert and still have room for filters, granola bars, water bottle, etc...

I assume you also have a Brownie in your bag with all that film?

It really depends on what system you decide on and how many and what size lenses.
I'm a big fan of Think Tank, designed by photographers for photographers. I have used a Shape Shifter Backpack as my primary bag for many years and I have a number of bags to choose from. I use an Airport Security roller bag when I need to bring my big glass. I shot professional sports for years and put my bags through all the torture tests and they are still in great shape. I haven't visited their web page for years and notice they have really expanded their product line to fit just about any use where when I first bought my bags they primarily targeted professional photographers, and still may. I haven't looked closely, don't need any more bags . |

I ended up w/ a Canon DSLR, full frame, so I bought a Canon film camera as well to have a single set of lenses. Had a Contax with some Zeiss but sold it. I kind of loved it but had to admit I couldn't honestly see a difference in the shots so I let it go to pare down. I have a Rolleiflex as well. Haven't done much other than digital since my kid was born though. I'm still keeping the remaining film gear, along with my B&W developing stuff. I do that then scan. Will get back into it someday, I hope! |

I have a Lowepro AW backpack which I have had for 10+ years and purposely doesn't look like a backpack carrying £5k+ of Canon gear.

I have three bags for 3 different occasions that I researched extensively to find the right fit for me. I can recommend all three wholeheartedly.
1) Think Tank Photo Urban Disguise 50 Classic - I use this for work related photoshoots and when I'm just going out for fun when I want to carry almost all my lenses. I can fit 4 lenses plus a body in here. It's a beast, and it's a necessity for all my gear, but I wouldn't carry it around all day. The best feature is that it's top loading and the flap doesn't cover the top. I really can't stand having to deal with a large flap that most messenger bags have just to do a fast lens swap. I can easily and quickly do lens swaps with this bag, faster than any of my other bags. Link 2) Lowepro Photo Sport Sling 100 AW - I use this for hiking and vacations. I can fit extra clothes, my water bottle, 2 lenses and a full frame body plus a long lens in the main compartment. This can carry a ton of gear with comfort and can easily access a camera through the side loader. It's not as convenient as a messenger bag obviously, so I don't use this for photoshoots. I absolutely love this bag, I've taken through some rough terrain all over the world and it's been very good to me. Fits a Gorilla Tripod quite easily but I have also mounted my big tripod on it as well. Honestly I love love love this bag. It's so comfortable and so versatile. It never feels too big or too small with all the compression straps. I think compression straps are one of the most overlooked features of a backpack. When you are hiking, you don't want loose gear swinging around your back, you want it snug and tight. I hope this bag lasts my whole life because I can't find another bag like it. Link 3) Slingshot Edge 250 AW - This is my more casual bag for when I just want a lens or two and don't have to carry much else. I like this because it can still take a full size waterbottle (a must for me) and is side loading for convenience. It has an attachment system in front to mount a full size tripod which it surprisingly does well, especially for a sling. Great bag. Link

I like Think Tank, well thought out, durable and plentiful storage space. The backpack is Burton another well done bag like Think Tank.
I don't shoot much.
