My gf has an almost FBO (stock IC) mk7 gti with a tune. If I lead foot it, it spins all the way up through second before hooking in third.
Tire setup is slightly wider than stock, as much as it can be without fender modification

With a proper launch on the GTI, my car will still walk it without breaking a sweat

This. If you DIY the costs are...manageable given the performance. If you have to pay a shop for it all there are better cars out there.

Once you have done all the maintenance, coding, and FBO mods yourself etc. you should be ready to tackle almost anything on any car.
I'm sure you can relate, but everyone's time is worth a certain amount so sometimes I'd rather pay someone to fix it rather than spend time being frustrated to do it myself.

I could hand the car over for half a day and then go work a day of OT to make up for money lost

They were close races and some were just faster than me. Just sharing my experience. Once I upgraded turbos, it was no contest but the cost of my build by then was also above what the GTIs were spending.
I've been in my neighbors stage 2 golf r which has a k04 turbo. It was a definite improvement but still no match and given it being awd it didn't have the traction issues my gti had

They are indeed fwd and cannot properly put the power down (atleast not without a lsd mine was open diff) I would spin through 1-2 gear on 225s conti DWs and depending on my speed if I floored it around 40mph (dsg in auto) it would do rolling burnouts

I am nearing 6 years of ownership I think its hands down ithe best car overall that i ever owned

when i first got it and it was stock i got bored of it after a year and decided to tune it and its been fbo and e85 for 4+ years i still cant believe how fast it is and how hard it pulls

I have been thinking about getting a F80 M3 as i now have the means to do it I make almost twice as much as when i bought the 335i But its still the benchmark off which i measure every other car so if I do get an F80 the 335i is still going to be around for a long time

I had a mk7. Mine was pushing 400whp with the IS38 turbo, meth, and custom tune and all it did is light the tires all the way to third gear
