SOLVED. Programming abort. STATUS 5. Is it recoverable?

I have a friend with an E87 130i. He tried to update the software with his cheap ass k+dcan cable and the trans (6hp19) now has a programming abort status 5 error. I have an ICOM A and was thinking of trying to flash it with WINKFP. I have never experienced this programming abort before though. Does anybody have any advice or tips to share? Cheers.

If using Winfkp expert mode you can access the diagnostics programs and "talk" to the GKE, the boot code has not been damaged and it can be recovered with the right cable and knowledge.

It's actually very difficult to damage the boot code via ODB.

Is there a way to check if the boot code is ok first, or should i just try to flash it and see what happens?

If it will flash in comfort mode, go for it.

If winfkp does not cooperate in comfort mode go to expert mode and run any of the diagnostic tools. Don't need much just an ID check will be enough to know if the GKE is responding.

You absolutely need the write cables or you will continue to have problems.

I have a genuine BMW ICOM and ethernet cable. Will that be ok, or will it need to be a usb?

I've never used the icom but they should be better. I've had good luck with quality DCan cables and the BimmerGeeks cable with the modified drivers avoiding the Idiabas Bug found in the standard DCan cables.

Issue now fixed. Updated with WINKFP in comfort mode and deselected bootsectorupdate before flashing. All good now. Also turns out it wasn't a 6hp19 trans like he said it was. It actually had the GM trans. Thanks for your input guys.
