Steering Wheel Airbag Help

Hello all,

So I was installing the M button on my E90 the other day. As some of you who have done work on the steering wheel may be aware there is a T20 screw that connects the button cluster to the steering wheel trim. So as I was working, the screw fell in behind the airbag module and the steering wheel. Is it possible that this screw could set off the airbag?

Unlikely. The airbag connectors are well insulated. There's a chance it might make the horn go off at random times as it shorts the two airbag mounting plate to the steering wheel.

Shouldn't affect the airbag... But I would still just disassemble and remove that screw.

As above folks said, it shouldn't affect the airbag, but I would remove it. You don't want it to get stuck somewhere where the steering wheel connects to the clockspring and damage the wiring as you turn the wheel.

I should have included more detail in my initial post, yes I am aware that removing the airbag will be necessary, however I'm not at home at the moment and I don't have the 10mm socket required to disconnect the battery before removing the airbag. So my plan was to drive home an hour away tomorrow in order to get it but I was worried about 1. the airbag potentially going off in my face and 2. the wiring being damaged as mentioned above. I have the screwdriver to pop the module out so my question is really, is it better to drive home in order to disconnect the battery but risk the damage to the wiring etc. Or is it safe to pop out the airbag from the steering wheel now if I don't actually disconnect any of the wiring just to get the screw out as soon as possible?

If you don't disconnect the airbag wiring, you can just carefully pop it out, fish out the screw and pop the airbag back in.

BTW, you posted this in a Classifieds section.
