It does that before it fully warms-up.

On mine it sometimes also does it when fully warmed up, like when arriving home...

I don't notice it on mine, but I have not even had the car a month yet. My transmission does other things I don't understand like my acceleration at 80mph in D vs DS. D mode feels faster. I think DS mode pulls fine but D downshifts a little then boost kicks in and hold on.

That's why I think our transmission sucks balls.

God I wish we had an ZF 8-speed. Can't wait to try out a PDK on my next car.

Mine will do this after it's full warm. Hour and a half commute home and it'll do it in traffic. It will shift at the normal shift point but very rough.

I had a similar problem a while back, when the car would shift from 2nd to 3rd. I could even hear a "clunk" during the process and feel a very rough shift too (as if I hit a bump).

The dealer performed a transmission adaptation. The SA stated this things happen.

Does it happen to other brands too? Everything that goes bad with the car is apparently normal according to the dealer.

I don't know if I need an adaptation or what, but under light acceleration its very obvious when the torque converter locks up. I'm not used to driving automatics so maybe that's just how the modern ones are but its always seemed strange. Nobody else in my car notices but me so maybe its not that obvious

In my case it was getting worse.
The mechanic at the dealership noticed the exact same thing I complained about.
He said due to updates in software and transmission learning feature, the shifting points have been magically disrupted.
It works fine now 6 months later.

+1. Awful when accelerating from a stop say at a right hand turn. Also have clunky 1-2-3 3-2 shifts

I reset mine again and went for a drive and it felt fine, it did all my fluids and filters so I decided to reset...

I did a full maintenance a while ago at ZF. Changed the oil, reset the adaptations, etc.

Solved the issue for a week, and then it was back again.

I've just resigned to living with that jump between 2nd and 3rd.

Why don't you take it to the dealer to reset it properly?

They did reset it properly. It was done by the official ZF dealer, so I would assume they know more about this than any BMW dealer.

For the record I had already brought it up with a BMW dealer, but they couldn't find anything so they decided to balance the wheels without consulting me. No comment.

Seeing the amount of people that suffer from this I'm starting to think that it's "normal", and some people get bothered by/notice it while others don't. My passengers don't seem to notice, for example

Same here. I did my tranny fluid change and filter a few weeks ago and overall my shifting is smooth; But for some reason, sometimes still does this rough shifting when cold at times only ( no warning lights or anything). I will try this Throttle reset and see if it helps. If not I will have to contact dealer and see if any software updates on the tranny will help to get rid of this rough shifting...

My driving habits changed since I work now short distance from home. As compared before most of my driving was freeway and avg 75MPH with a 40 mile distance both ways.

Anyone had had this experience?

'09+ Cayman S. Tough to find one with low mileage at Carmax though. Trying to take advantage of that bumper-to-bumper extended warranty!

There are two types of reset you can do, the one described here is about throttle, but the one for transmission is totally different reset that can only be done with appropiate coding tool.

Getting jerky shifts while the tranny isn't up to temp is completely normal. Don't get resetting adaptations thinking you're going to fix anything, you'll most likely just make things worse (Especially if you reset adaptations for the transmission)
