How do I know if the car needs a walnut blasting? What are the symptoms?

I'm the 2nd owner, purchased it with 92k miles on it a couple of months ago.

If it's never been done then you are overdue.
Poor idle, sometimes misfires and overall smoothness. It well effect top end power the most.

I don't have any of those symptoms. What I have noticed is black soot build up on the exhaust tips. I wipe it off and after 100~ city stop/go driving miles it's back.

Is that normal?

It's absolutely worth a peak to see where you are at with this particular maintenance. It absolutely should be done every 30-36,000 miles if you want the N54/55 motor to operate a peak performance 24/7/365.

You should also put a BMS catch can on & an upgraded PCV Valve. This will reduce the amount of carbon build up in between intervals.

Thanks, I did upgrade to the FTP N54 PCV Valve Upgraded Replacement V2.

I've checked out the BMS oil catch can, looks straight forward but I'm wondering if this an absolute must?

It you want the N54 to run the right way, yes. It can be more than reasonably argued that a catch can on the high side should have been standard equipment from the factory. If you tune the car, you'd be crazy not to have one.

Boost side catch cans collect next to nothing on these cars. Most oil blow by happens during vacuum not boost. There is an external pcv you can buy with a low side (vacuum) catch can. These will catch a lot more and can be effective. You can even go one step further and block the intake hole ports to stop blow by completely.
Don't waste your money on a boost catch can.
I don't run any cans and my oil level doesn't change ...so I'm guessing my blow by is very minimal for my driving style.
Do a walnut or intake valve clean. Your car will thank you.

You just leave yours idling through the night or something? When's the last time you shut it off?

Talked to the 2nd shop today who suggested I uninstall the MHD Stage 1 prior to them doing the walnut blast since they could be updating the DME.

Does anyone have personal experience with this and MHD?

Why would they be updating the DME?

I think they were trying to say the blasting may cause the car to go thru adaptations, which is what it should do.

I read the MHD manual and contacted MHD as well. There's no need to do anything with the MHD software.
