Is burning oil in a 335d common?
I have a deleted 335d with 90k miles. Noticed that I'm burning about a quart every 2k miles. Double checked for leaks and don't have any. Anyone else having this happen?

Anyway, when I noticed the oil around this area I took out the air intake and the piping with the CCV heater part out and began cleaning and I noticed so much oil below the oil distributor block piece (just a layer). Because of the spread I had a good feeling it wasn't a leak of great magnitude. I have checked since and not noticed any more over here. If it helps describe it better if you're looking from the front of the car im talking about behind the metal part that the red hose is connected to. Also there was a generous amount of oil in my intercooler so I cleaned that out too which was great fun. I did all the way up to where the CCV hose connects to the valve cover. Could there be any problems causing excessive blowby? Orher than the fact that I have lost the black clip holder on the boost hose I suppose.. If this makes anyone feel better I also had the same layer of gunk on the other side of the block under the intake manifold. Obviously just had been there for a long time and not been cleaned, maybe ever. Im sure if the block had been taken apart perhaps accidentally. Well I know you didn't ask for a novel but I sure gave you one. ![]() |

That's all really interesting and typical, but completely different than what the OP's got. They seem to normally send quite variable amounts out the CCV. Curious why the OP thinks his oil is "burning" tho, if that is in fact where it's going.

That would not support the burning theory. So a lack of blue smoke and leaks leaves a tired engine pushing it out through the CCV. It gets burned, just very slowly with most pooling in the intercooler. I drilled a small hole in a bottom corner of the I/C once, just to see if anything came out. The issue with CCV flow is how much/how fast. All that plumbing from the turbo in starts wet with CCV oil on the inside brand new and just gets worse over time/mileage. If you're getting alot of blowby, the engine is nearing the end of it's useful life due to either poor maintenance or simple longevity.
Related Bonus Question: Who knows the primary purpose of the intake throttle valve? It could be as simple as a 2-word answer. ![]() Last edited by Nadir Point; 09-26-2021 at 11:03 AM.. |

I've never owned a turbo vehicle that didn't burn a little bit of oil. Its fairly common I believe
My deleted x5 burns maybe less than 500ml in 8000kms.

A quart every 2k miles? Yikes. Perhaps a quart every 10k miles depending on which oil you're using. You've got a problem.

I have BMW 3 diesels:
- 2013 E70 : original owner, 90K mi - 2016 F25 : original owner 40K mi - 2011 E90 : 4th owner, 136K mi (only 5K mi mine so far). E70 looses 1L of between 10K mi oil changes (BMW TPT LL04 5w30) F25 has no oil loss between 8K mi oil changes (BMW TPT LL12-FE 0w30) E90 lost approximately 0.5L on 8,600mi (Shell Rotella T6 5w40) Last year I added Provent 200 on E70. My canister collects exactly 1L of oil on 10K mi oil run. |
