Bird pee melted my clearcoat!
How often have you seen bird pee? Well, personally I don't believe I have ever had the pleasure... until, of course, I buy a shiny new BMW  I noticed a strange sticky dribble on my trunk lid yesterday and when I took it to the dealer this morning, they said it was bird pi$$ and that there was nothing they could do (save repaint the whole lid). I had heard that bird droppings were corrosive, but I've never seen it eat away the clearcoat like this before. It's not too visible, fortunately, and is difficult to photograph, but I can definitely see the line of acid pi$$ etched into my paintwork. You have been warned

Oh, that´s really shit, but you aren´t allone with this, some owners in
German Forums have also the same problem - the paint isn´t so resistant against like this as in earlier times, if you´re not too fast remove it, you´ll see the spot. I even remember, that someone have varnished his whole bonnet, but his dealer shared the costs with him, the car wasn´t old, only a few weeks. But perhaps you could remove yours with a good polish. ![]()

I have the same problem, just not with birds. It's a freakin' marten, marking his territory. And that happens to be my car. So everytime I wash my car (black sapphire
![]() If you are not quick enough to remove it, it will eat up the clearcoat. Especially in sunny conditions. But I was able to buff it out in most cases. Waxing your car regularly helps preventing those stains. |

but LEO is very good for this! ![]() You can be happy, that the marten don´t disturb any other things in your car - like cool-water-, brake-tubes or other importants!! Your tip with waxing is very good, I´ve got to buy something at my BMW-dealer (wash&wax). ![]()

We don't have that problem here, must be the French wine that the birds are drinking.
![]() You should talk to a reputable detailer. There may be products and skills that can smooth it out and remove the etching or at least minimize it.

It sounds like it's just etched, and has not eaten through the whole clear coat because if it had eaten through the clear you would be able to see it very well, and it would be very noticable in a picture (the paint would look dull with no shine at all).
In this case, you can buff it off yourself with a PC, good foam pads and a quality polish. Don't listen to the dealer recommending a repaint. |

Paul, I've had the same problem on my car. The birds acidity "burns" the clearcoat - and you can especially see it because your car is black.
Soak some paper towel in milk, place it over the "Etching" and let it sit there for say an hour. (Obviously the area must be clean) Then wash the car, clay, polish and wax the boot - and the problem should be hardly noticible. The milk neutralises the acid. Leave the wax on longer, say 20 minutes instead of 10 - I don't know why...but it helps. I am not crazy either. |

Thanks for your help, guys. Much appreciated. I like the sound of the milk solution, I'll give it a try

Nevermind, I found an answer to my own question:
Yes and no... a birds' droppings are typicly green with a white "cap". The color and consistency change with different foods and liquids consumed and how different the diet is. Birds who are strict bug-eaters poo white, while birds that eat fruits can poo the color of the fruit they ate. As in cockatiels, for example, the white part that is equal to human urine, called the "urate" can be expelled in liquid form. If a bird "pees", is is usually a sign that there is a digestive problem, whether the bird is sick or just ate something that did not agree with them.
