In my pre-COVID office at work, the television was IN the fireplace! (Yes, seriously.)
When a handful of geeks/nerds get creative, a flat screen TV playing a yule log video gets stuffed into a closed/capped fireplace to create some holiday spirit: .

You live in the south so perhaps your view on a fireplace is different than some of us who get winter. As I mentioned we have 4 fireplaces in our home and we use two of two of them quite a lot with the one in our bedroom reserved for really cold nights. Here are two of them, the main living room has a walk around mantle fireplace that I'd argue is the focal point of the room, the one with the TV is in our basement and it's the only place in the house that can really accommodate TV, this fireplace is going from about the end of December to the end of March 24/7 to supplement our heating. I agree not an ideal viewing height, but it's not awful....I do have it slightly angled but it really needs to have a bit more downward tilt which will require some drywall modifications to the ceiling.

When we remodeled I miraculously found this company the day before we framed out our fireplace. Perfect solution for us.
https://www.mantelmount.com/ Can be retrofitted as well. |

Thats clever but i can see the mount having issues over time of folks just not bothering to use it. Good for an event maybe, with a crowd.
