Question Little Steering Play E92

Hi Everyone

My car is 2013 E92 335i xdrive.

I am having a little play in my steering, below is the video what is happening.
Its the same while parked engine is off or if I am driving it.

This steering play (while I do this) doesn't move the steering shaft if I look at it while the hood is open. As soon as I move it more then in the video the shaft moves.

I went to a mechanic and he said, we have to replace the Lower Steering shaft Joint Assembly. I can get it changed but something says to me that its not the problem with the Lower Steering shaft Joint Assembly.

I am trying to figure out if this play is not even moving the shaft in first place , can the problem be somewhere else, like in between the steering and the shaft.

I just don't want to replace the Lower Steering shaft Joint Assembly and then again be told the problem is somewhere else.

I watched a lot of videos but none show when there is play in the steering what is happening to the lower shaft.

May be one of you experts have an idea about it.

Thank you in advance

This has been covered pretty extensively. Most likely problem:

The screw that pinches the lower steering shaft U-joint around the splined column shafts can back itself out and leave a little bit of a dead spot when the rack/wheel is neutral.

I got a longer screw from McMaster to install, then put a jamb nut on where it sticks out the other side of the shaft coupler.

The steering column doesn’t have the same potential for wear/play that the steering shaft does—especially on the xDrive cars whose shafts have a double Cardan joint. So, your mechanic is probably correct.

As Brian said above, sometimes a loose pinch bolt is to blame. Definitely check this first. If that isn’t the case, then shaft replacement is likely the solution.
