BMW’s high-performance M Division has been making outstanding road cars for the past 50 years, and countless debates and features can be found about which car is the best of them.

And so, we wondered, not which is the best M car, but what represents the finest parts of all M cars? What is the goldilocks zone? How would one create the perfect M car?

We’ve taken some brilliant Ms, from the very first, the M1, through to the very latest, the M5 CS, as we’ve travailed to find out. Our intrepid reporters Matt Prior and James Disdale bring you the story.

Two slightly tedious old men dissect what makes a great M car.

I enjoyed the video. It's tedious. But I'm here on a forum with like minded individuals that may enjoy it.

If I had to just have two of them it would be the e30 and the orange monster.

My ideal M garage would be M2CS and 3.0CSL though. They somehow missed the best.
