Toyota buys Model Y, tears down, calls it a work of art

https://www.drive.com.au/news/toyota...of-art-report/

Quote:
Engineers from Japanese car giant Toyota have called the Tesla Model Y a “work of art” after tearing down an example of the electric SUV, according to overseas reports.

A Toyota insider reportedly told industry journal Automotive News the Tesla had been purchased in an attempt to discover the US electric-car giant’s ‘technological secrets’, though engineers were left surprised at how advanced the Model Y was under its bodywork.

“Taking the skin off the (Tesla) Model Y, it was truly a work of art,” a Toyota executive told Automotive News. “It's unbelievable.”

You realize Toyota admitting Tesla's engineering is a work of art means that Tesla just completely revolutionize what we know today as Toyotas Kaizen method to manufacturing which all leading professionals believe to be the bible. All these college courses dedicated to the Kaizen and supply chain will need to be rewritten. Toyota outed the original founders grandson as CEO recently because his reluctance to move to EV's.

Toyota is hardly what it used to be. I still have my 1984 pickup I bought new. Most Taco's will be dust in 35-years.

Not sure engineering and manufacturing are the same. You could say the engineering on a Pagani is amazing while the manufacturing process is garbage if they build each one by hand.

Somethings smells like a future alliance so Toyota can catch up from EV reluctance.

That article reads like sponsored fluff. Scant details beyond a vague declaration of "Tesla is great." No one really named... engineering "team," "executive."

I just found another article: "Automotive News Discovered to be Marketing Arm of Tesla."

Yep, that’s it. We all know that Tesla has the biggest marketing budgets in the entire automotive world. They hired more marketers than engineers last year.

I thought the same thing lol

Tesla's tech is pretty cool, we can't deny that.. but they have SO MUCH to improve on.. Maybe partnering with Toyota will help them with their styling, fit and finish (bc they're built like sh*t) and also help toyota with market share in the EV space.

Welcome to today's news where a single unnamed executive allegedly saying "it was truly a work of art" means engineers from Toyota called the Y a "work of art". It's pretty well a nothing article based of nothing other than conjecture.

This is why I wouldn't buy a Toyota lol...

A company that makes NA V6 FWD cars with Drum Brakes probably would be amazed by a Tesla.

My 12 year old 2011 Scion tc has disc brakes all around so its just dependent on the car itself?

Which FWD NA V6 do they still make that has drum brakes? the 2023 Camry V6 XSE TRD has disc brakes, even the most base model 2023 Corolla L is on disc brakes. Tacos use drum brakes for its very off-road specific reason

Unless you're talking about Tacoma trucks, which aren't FWD, I don't know if any other US sold Toyota still using rear drum brakes.

But to your point, I somewhat agree. Toyota is a massively risk adverse company and is so slow to move forward. My wife's 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium is a prime example. Her 4runner, which is the same exact truck sold for the 2023 model and was introduced in 2012, is woefully outdated. It's hilarious:

- Long geared, slow-ass shifting 5 speed automatic
- Manually selectable 4WD (you pull a lever connected directly to the transfer case)
- Standard fuel injection (not direct)
- Super dim halogen headlights (Toyota finally went HID in 2021)
- No auto climate control (only included on the $50K+ Pro and Limited)
- No 3 flash turn signals
- 16-19 mpg

The wife loves it though. I'm glad we didn't a pay dollar more than $38.2K for it (listed at $44K).

That was more of a facetious comment on my end... but it seems you get exactly what I meant... 38k is about a fair price for a 4runner in today's world

I am under the impression that Toyota being so slow to move forward is why the recent CEO got ousted.

Yep, I’m a fanboy, but I see this as a huge compliment (read the Relentless Pursuit book sometime). My 22 Model S is 95% BMW quality, I love it and drive it way more than my M cars. Why can’t Americans rally around a freakin awesome company with a CEO that’s doing so much good rather than always be so negative? It a win guys, embrace it rather than poo poo on everything. We need positivity in this country.

What makes Tesla so awesome? They build the car you love? Also what good is Elon doing besides making himself rich? You actually think he's doing this for the planet? Really? Everything he's done, he's done for himself and that's been slowly revealed with his acquisition of twitter and we have found out exactly what type of person he really is.
