Does open hood prevent the car from going to "sleep mode"? (trickle charging)
Hello,
I want to maintain my battery cause my car is not a daily driver, so I will let a trickle charger hooked. I read some conflicting informations here and here. Is it ok to plug the battery charger with hood open and car closed ? (the car has a push button sensor near the cabin filter, driver side) Or does the open hood will prevent the car from going to "sleep mode" and will draw some energy ? What is the best practice ? (For the moment, it's hooked with hood open, and doors locked and I put some weight on the button sensor to simulate that the hood is closed)

When I charge my battery I just have the hood open. The car does enter a sleep mode eventually I think because if I were to open the handle you hear all the electronics waking up and all. And when that happens my battery charger level always drops down a bit until it goes into sleep mode again I noticed.

The car will enter sleep mode after x amount of time then. Lot of people are running N54 without cowl (so the button sensor is unplugged), and I noticed something similar, that when working on removing or installing back the cowl, when I connect back or unplug the sensor, things wake up too (fuel pump activate or something), it just like if you move the mouse while the computer is sleeping However, my car was not locked when it happens, but it shouldn't change the behaviour.

Ignition off is what triggers the process for sleep mode after 16 minutes. I've trickle charged my car with both hood open and hood closed (and alarm armed) with no issues.

What made me doubt was reading a post of someone that noticed its battery was draining faster with open hood (he was opening the hood to prevent his cats to lay on the hood). While IBS seems to be a clever system, it also seems to drain the battery to a certain point, one SoC measure every 14 seconds, isn't it a bit excessive to monitor the battery every 14 seconds?!?... When it's critical it will probably go into "emergency" mode that I got sometimes (date and time reset) and lot of stuff are shutted down? Maybe the alarm too? I understand now why if I don't daily drive the car, my batteries won't last more than 3-4 years. The IBS + the alarm are probably factors. Now the battery is new, on battery tender, I hope it will be better. (I need to buy an anti surge power strip for peace of mind) Quote:
(But now I won't bother anymore since it's the same with hood open or closed)
