stock car front diff failure?

have a M340i that had a whine since i could remember. not sure if it was there the day i bought it at 800 miles.

took it in at 15000miles for service and they say the front diff will be replaced under warranty

i'm a bit concerned - how does the front diff fail and how to avoid it in the future?

it comes with staggered tires from factory. all tires in equal wear and very good condition. i'd hate to think that's the cause, i would have thought if the tire diameter was an issue the transfer case would be affected rather than the front diff.

thanks
