2008 335xi or 2007 STi - What Power mods canbe done/turbo upgrade/stock ECU Tune??
Hey all,
I am new to the forum and have some questions about the 335xi. I am in a finacial position to purchase a car. I have two choices. I am trying to decide between the 2008/2009 335xi coupe 6mt or a 2007 Subaru STi/Limited. I owned a 2004 STi that pushed out 490whp on a Dyno Dynamics Dyno which is over 600 on a Dyno Jet. Anyway, i dont have that car anymore and I am not looking to go as extreme this time, but I want around 400whp on a Dyno Dynamics which is 500 on a Dyno Jet LOL . My question is what mods can be done because I could easily make over 400 on an STi with a Turbo Updrade, Injectors, Headers and Exhaust, intake and a front mount as well as you can tune the stock ECU. What tuning software is out for the 335xi. Can you tune the stock ECU. Are there turbo's out that can replace the factory without going single. As well as headers, do they make any yet. What are some high hp 335's out there. LMK Thanks -Mark |

sounds like you want an sti. don't think people are making 500 dynojet whp on a 335...yet. on a 335 you can easily make 390whp on a dynojet with stock turbos though, and have a nice ride.

no turbo kits as of yet, you'd be hard pressed to find a 500whp 335i out there as of right now...and even if you did, there'd be a ton of money spent and the motor would be suspect in terms of stability.
and I doubt they're making 395 awhp...maybe rwhp...remember this is a discussion about awd. |

If its power you want get an Evo. I have owned both Sti and Evos. There is no comparison. However, if you have come to that point in your life where you are tired of changing spark plugs, looking at your oil pressure, EGT gauge every five seconds, getting bothered by the cops, and being reved at by every civic and srt4 in town, wondering when that block is going to give out, then get a 335. You can get the catless DP and a juice box 2 ($1000 total with self install) and put down around 350whp and 380wtq on a DJ which is still plenty of power to eat most cars on the road with no headaches. AND you can still pick up a classy girl and take her out on a date and not have her wonder why you're driving a car with a jet fin on the back ( that's what my girl thought the first time I picked her up in my IX). Then, if you really miss the speed, go get yourself a liter bike and eat any car you want on the road, yes including enzos and 800whp supras.

lol to all of you. haha. But i mean i want to take my time, make the right decision and choose my car. I want to make some power obvi. but Im curious of how this ECU works. Can you tune the factory ECU. Im guessing no one knows how much whp the tranny can take. What is a juice box? Do they make a standalone for this car. I dont see why you couldnt make 400whp on a DD Dyno with the supported mods listed above and maybe some meth. I really like the luxury part of the BMW, thats why I considered the limited, but I just want to learn more about these cars because I know everything about a suby. LOL. Thanks everyone.

modding the 335i and modding the sti/evo's are completely different games...as someone said before, the evo hauls ass but there's other stuff you have to deal with (though i was never really bothered in my evo, and i never had a problem with it mechanically)...same goes for the 335i....as of yet there are no stand-alones, only piggybacks and flashes (dinan).

If you're willing drop the cash on it, yeah you can get some custom IC piping welded together along with a custom IC. Port the intake and exhaust manifolds or just have Shearer build you one for a single turbo set up. Drop in some Ross pistons and rods (they will custom make them for you) and pop on a T68 (don't worry the cylinder walls are iron sleeved on the 335i). Then drop a 50-100 shot to spool the turbo quickly and meth injection to turn the boost up all the way without the need for race gas. Get a Motec ECU management system and have it tuned by an expert. All you got left is the restrictive exhaust system which you can easily take care of with a pretty cheap custom 4'' system, suspension work, wheels, tires, fender rolling, COP ignition system etc... Voila, you got yourself a 700whp 335 with little spool, great power band, and top end. Now are you willing to spend $100K on thes mods to make all this work together? Get an Evo for power. If you want some luxury, with good power, and reliability, and are not looking to race Evos and Stis everytime you see one on the highway then get the BMW.

take the BMW, i came from a TT G35 and it was annoying looking at boost egt gauges every 5minutes and wondering when i was going to get a ref. ticket.
sold it, got the BMW, couldn't be happier. the 335i will kill the majority of other cars out there already, its enough HP for me.... for now might have to get JB3 or V3

haha, its so funny how all these guys have had evo's and went to bmw. Lol. Idk want an evo especially b.c of plugs.. lol, you all know what im talking about. As for the STi. The limited has leather and is nice and looks great for an STi but is no BMW as we all know. Im just wondering because you could make 400whp fairly easy on an STi and now im not talking about spending 100K on an STi or BMW, already did that to my STi, built motor, 4094r turbo ect.. Im used to the lag lol. But if I wanted to make say 400 on a dyno dynamics dyno, if I did headers, custom turbo back, injectors, turbo upgrade, intake, fmic, meth and a tune (on stock ecu) I couldnt hit 400 on a 6cyl. When I can hit over 400 on a STi. Im just comparing motors really. The cars I know are completely different, but I love the BMW interior, luxury and body style especially the coupe. So I want to look at every car, but dont want a car that I cant do anything to in the future. ya know. thanks everyone. This is really helpful information for me.

Coming from an STI and being really active on an STI exclusive board I think I can bring a little perspective on this. First things first, the 07 and 08 STI motors are fragile. The factory cast pistons blow out their rings and ring lands on a regular basis. Part of the issue is curable due to a crappy stock tune from Subaru, but even tuned 07 and 08 STIs are blowing up. The 04-06 motors are a lot more durable and take 400 hp easier then the newer models. But if you are looking at buying an 07 and want to compare engines, the fragility of the motor is important to take into account.
The weakness in the 335 engine, for comparison, is the stock turbos. Basically the waste gates on these cars can become defective and cause problems, especially on tuned cars. But when comparing areas of failure, I think we can all agree that failed turbos are not as bad as a blown engine. As far as tuning goes, the 335 aftermarket is not as well developed. Only recently have people announced they are working on turbo upgrades for these cars. But that makes sense as this is a 2 year old platform while the STI has been in production world wide for years. As time passes, more products will become available for the 335 and you will be able to pull more power out of it. That said, many on this board are making around 400 whp with minor mods and the stock turbos. No STI can claim that (400 whp without swapping the turbo). Lastly, when it came time for me to replace my 04 STI, after it got stolen, after test driving the EVO X, 08 STI and the 335xi, I chose the 335. The reason I chose it was that right out of the factory its just a better package. Similar power, handling and performance with much better looks, much better interior and better features. And with just a tune I can be making well over 300 hp at all four wheels. For my purposes, the 335 was better in every category except price. So I bought it.

If you're comparing engines obviously the inline 6 with iron sleeves is going to make a ton more power with similar mods. Now how much are these mods going to cost is the problem. Most of the aftermarket stuff for the BMW are in their infancy as far as development goes hence anything new comes out, it costs an arm and a leg. Making 500whp on a DJ is going to be a breeze once they have a single turbo set up. Hopefully by then your warranty is going to be out and you'll be able to go all out. The N54 could be the future's 2JZ or RB26 IMHO. Its just a matter of time. Now, if you want to talk about making easy power again just get a IX. I had HKS RS intake, full exhaust, EBC, meth, custom tune and made 400whp and 415awtq on DJ at 29psi. It cost me less than $1300 and it was reliable as hell. Then I went 35r and made over 530awhp on stock block. Then I had to do drop in Ross pistons and Eagle rods which took less than a day and made 598awhp and 530awtq on C16 at 32psi.

Having owned a WRX w/ an STI long block....I can safely say if you are after power, go with the EVO hands down. Even with the bigger displacement the EJ25 has a very long exhaust manifold and does not lend itself to spool a large turbo with respectable lag. Additionally, the 4G63 is just a superior motor not to mention the EVO comes with a FMIC while the STI has a TMIC that gets cooked by the motor.
