07 335i 92,9xx miles.

My car feels like it has these tiny misfires while driving or idle. When driving it feels like it loses power for 0.5 of a second. idle you can feel it too. I figured my intake valves needed a cleaning so I got someone local that works for BMW to do it for me with proper BMW tools for $210. We took a look inside the valves and holy shit did they need a cleaning. After that was done it was a pretty noticeable difference. The rough idle was gone, didn't lose rpm's at idle, and the car felt a lot better, however the problem still persists with the small loss of power/misfire feeling. I'm not throwing any misfire codes though. I was told by someone else locally who drives an e90 330i that it's the VANOS solenoids and he was having the same issue. Could that cause the issue I'm describing? if not, what else should I troubleshoot to narrow the possibilities down? Leaky valve cover gasket and oil is getting places where it's not supposed to be maybe?

5k miles maybe? I don't think they were put in to exact torque specifications

I was fighting that issue for a while too. At a steady 65 or 70, etc. mph cruise I too would feel a "miss" or stutter; but it only happened at steady cruise, usually around 2000 rpm. After swapping plugs, it seemed to go away for a while, but then came back again.

Anyway, I just finished a long list of maintenance items (valve cleaning, tstat + water pump, OFHG, plugs, valve cover, etc.) but it was still doing it. After *searching* I found that most peeps had pinpointed the problem to bad coil(s). I guess those could theoretically go bad, even though they've never misfired enough to throw any type of code. Given that, I just replaced those with Delphi units the other day, so with more seat time, we shall see if that fixes it. If not, it's back to the drawing board...

Yeah. Order the plugs online and you can save big money. I went OEM with eEuroparts.com

My symptoms were very different: car running rough and SES light on. But, mine is a 2006 e90 330i.

My buddy has the same stuttering issue. He has done all of below and resolved NOTHING and dealer can't figure it out. He's contemplating selling the car.

Walnut blasting
New plugs
New coils
New injectors

I'm also contemplating getting an e46 again. much more simpler and cheaper to maintain.

Sounds like a coil going bad. I had one take 3+ weeks until it finally triggered the light and I could get a diagnosis about which one it was. I wouldn't jump to vanos issues yet. You can try just buying one coil and replacing them one at time until you find the right one. The front 3 can be swapped in about 2 mins each once you've done it a few times. The back half take longer because you've got to remove the cowl though. That's why I waited for the light. Sure enough, it was #5.

Look at your Eccentric Shaft Sensor: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=697252. Just take the plug out and look to see if their is oil build up in it like the picture on my forums, that could likely be the cause. I havnt confirmed it or fixed it yet, but i took glass cleaner cloth and a tooth pick to get down in the sensor and cleaned up some of the oil and for the next day or two it ran without a single stall. So when i do eventually get around to getting it in I will have them look at the sensor as well as vacuum leak or intake build up. Shafts sensors are a lot of money to replace though $1800ish at the dealership, $1100 at a specialist, $400 for the part. So be sure before going to replace it.

When you say intake ports were cleaned, did they do a walnut blast or some other method?

Also what plugs did you buy?

Here are some suggestions, specially if you don't have codes.

1) my rule: when changing plugs....change all coils also.
2) vanos solenoids: clean and swap positions.
3) injector cleaner: either BG44k or Techron Concentrate. 2 tanks worth....back to back.
4) full Adaptation Reset.

Let us know how it goes.
