Right here go's...
MM's called to say they have found the problem so i went down there. They had ordered the blue relay but got sent the wrong one However, when opening up the ECU casing there is a puddle of water at the bottom and when pulling out the DME ECU unit its dripping with water and if I shook it you could hear the water! We checked all of the seals on the bonnet and all 4 of the clamps for the ECU case and every bit was good and strong. So how the hell did water get in there enough to soak the ECU? So, that's what they've put it down to, a new DME ECU unit (£716.10 - Part only). The engineer that I spoke to, Derek (nice chap), who was working on my car said that he had started the car several times prior to the discovery without problems but said that didnt suggest that the ECU was OK and plus I run the risk of frying the entire loom if I leave it like that. Sounds plausable I suppose... Good news is that my 3 month warranty is going to cover the cost but they will be sending their own engineer to asses the work before MM's can even begin, for 2 reasons alone; 1. The claim is so soon after the warranty started (I only bought the car 3 weeks ago) 2. Because the cost has exceeded £500. I still cant help but think its just the relay, MM's are going to fit the ECU and the problem will still be there but I'd rather get the expensive work done under warranty and end up paying for the relay part myself if it does turn out to be that We'll see.... Thanks again to everyone that chipped in with advice |

If there is damp in that box the relay could be bucked too but as you say, get the dollars spent first and do the relay last, actually.....I would just do it anyway while that box is open tbh for 10 quid
Good news all the same J |

How did I not see this coming?!
Well, after verbally confirming that the work/repairs for a replacement ECU WOULD be covered my warranty company (AutoTrust) have now done a complete u-turn and have now confirmed that because the ECU housing had not drained the water as it should have, its down to water digression that the fault has occured and is therefore not covered. (basically the plug at the bottom should allow the water to drain but it hasnt and apparently that it why it is not covered). I have since spoken to trading standards who have made the obvious point about the 'Sale of goods act - amended 1979'. I have also called the garage who sold me the car to keep them in on the loop. Cut a long story short, I'm waiting to hear back from the Garage that sold me the car (they may offer a goodwill gesture) but as the car is on Finance, technically the Finance company own the car. As advised by TSI I have written a letter to the Finance Company (with one of TSI's own templates) that basically says "its your car, your responsibility and is clearly not fit for purpose/intended use as a car". Updates to come, thick and fast. The saga continues. ARRGGGGHHHHHH I just want to drive and enjoy my new car, not have to deal with this!!! |

Having been into my ECU box a few times I find it totally implausable that the watertight ECU enclosure can fill with water.
The whole thing is then covered with the microfiler tray just to make it more unlikely! These 'finds' make me highly suspicious. I would dry it out and refit. If it has not failed, the issues may be down to water ingress into the connectors. Interesting you can hear water inside the unit. I thought they were hermetically sealed but maybe I was wrong? Steve

Hi How did this saga end? I'm having similar problems with my E91 330d 2006 - had the DSC Failure message this morning. My car is in the Garage now for a whole list of problems to be fixed (I only bought it a couple of months ago) Last edited by kempyp; 09-19-2017 at 08:14 AM.. |

Thread revival.
This happened to me today, been raining all morning drive the car, was fine. Got back in it an hour later. Fired up but sounded like shit, drove it 10 meters cuts out and all the errors mentioned in this thread appear. At a garage now. This thread has given me some hope, I was thinking something had got wet. So this reaffirms the theory somewhat. Bloody car. |

Just to give feedback for anyone else who has the similar issue.
Unfortunately in my case the ecu was literally submerged and full of water. So it's fucked basically and needs to be replaced. It was monsoon weather the day the car died, just unlucky I guess. 1300 quid all in - not been a nice day.

Yes was painful - picked up the car this morning all OK again, it was going to get a transmission service this month but it can bloody well wait till Jan after this outrage.

Damn such an old thread and hopefully, it helps me! Revival time!
I'm new here and I've been having this same issue whenever the car gets a lot of water. Car wash or loads of rain. My issue is DSC failure, DSC failure, Flat tyre monitor failure. Car wont start Living 2-hour drive from the closest BMW garage We thought of trying to figure out the issue after tinkering with the car for a few days we thought to unplug the ECU and leave it out for a few hours and plug it back it. Starts first time ever time. Once I figured out that water was the cause I started hand washing my car and had no issues up until Christmas eve Australia had its first big Rainstorm in 6 months and the Issue came back on Christmas day. I tried the olde unplug the ECU trick and this time it hasn't worked and not started since. BMW Australia has told me its probably ECU issues and quotes me upwards of $3000 AUD to fix this. The black relay was extremely hot after the car was just sitting there not doing anything so could this be the issue I am having? Should I try replacing both the black and blue ones? |

Hi everyone, I was searching online for this issue that i am having with my car and came accross this forum. I have a 07 320i and a couple of days ago noticed that my passenger side floor was wet after 2 days of rain here in sydney. I cleaned it up and noticed and the water was coming from the sunroof, I didn't pay much attention and was driving the car perfectly until the next morning when i went to star the car i get the DSC, DBC, TPMS and cruise control failure. The car would crank but not start but no check engine light, i have replaced the blue relay but problem persists. i assume it has something to do by the fact that the box where the ECU was had some water at the bottom but all cables and ECU were dry. I noticed there is another black relay there, anyone knows what that relay is and if I take it out it could solve my issue? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
