I just ordered the parts to do my valve cover gasket replacment (due to leak) and my broken head bolt (next to oil filter housing)
I have searched and read through threads, but I need a definite answer on the torque specs for these bolts. Valve Cover Gasket Bolts: ? Broken Head Bolt: ? The head bolt in question is literally the same bolt as in this thread ---> http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ken+head+bolts See post# 20 for the bolt in question. Thanks in advance. |

How did the replacement go? I'm looking into doing the same repair. My VCG is leaking and I am looking for a DIY write up. When you started replacing it, did you merely need to replace the bolt, or was the gasket itself crumbling?

It isn't a priority since it has no ill effects except a slow loss of oil and a burning smell from it dripping on the cats from time to time. I will post results and photos when I get around to doing the job. |

I hear ya there! Good luck on the repair. If it is not too much to ask would you possibly take some pictures? I would love to see this process. If not, no worries.
Who says burning cats are an ill effect?? lol, jk. Goodluck! |

hope these pics can help....please read the 1st paragraph on the 1st/2nd pic!!!!!
When you say "broken head bolt"....I think thats the "cylinder head cover fastener" (5) The valve motor bolt should be (1)....its pretty easy to DIY let me know if you need anything else.

Just google the bolt size and you should come up with the correct tap, helicoil insert, and drill bit.

There is already a DIY on this in the DIY section that covers not only VCG replacement, but replacement of the eccentric shaft sensor as well.

Is the helicoil insert does its job? My friend ordered it for me? Has anyone done this? I was just curious and nervous bout drilling and putting the helicoil thread to the stripped thread hole
