Flex User's Important Info
There has been some questions about the Flex 3401 and what to do with the felt ring behind the backing plate. Some users have reported problems where the backing plate was damaged because it came in contact with the felt ring. On autopia, some have oiled the felt ring, others have soaked the felt ring, and others haven't. Long story short, I spoke with George at Detailed Image to find out what we should or should not do. George suggested I contact Powerhouse Tools to get a definitive answer on what should or should not be done to your Flex 3401 before using it.
Long story short, I called Powerhouse Tools and they were extremely helpful in answering my questions. Here is exactly what they suggest doing before using your Flex: Before the device is ever turned on, they suggest removing the backing plate and taking the felt ring out. They are suggesting that everyone applies Air Tool Oil to the felt ring. They said apply 3-4 full revolutions of oil around the felt ring. Basically the ring should absorb enough oil to keep it lubricated protecting the backing plate if it should ever come in contact with the felt ring. If you apply to much oil, he just suggested blotting off the excess with some cloth and re-install. You just don't want it dripping oil because that will sling when you turn the machine on. Powerhouse Tools is actually doing this to every Flex that is bought from them before they send it out, so they are not just suggesting it, but doing it at their facility before sending them to customers. I hope this helps anyone with a Flex. |
