Possible Gearbox Fault??
This might just be a coincidence of crap gear changes or paranoia but thought I'd see what you guys thought.
As a reminder, I've got a manual 330d M Sport Saloon, '06' plate which has 45k on the clock. A couple of times recently it's just popped out of gear coupled with a rather loud clunk. It's happens about 3 times to me in the last few weeks (never before) and my wife mentioned it also happened to her recently. It jumped out of 1st earlier today but can't remember for sure what gear it's popped out of before; pretty sure it's 1st and maybe 2nd. Is this a sign of anything going pear-shaped??? The car is covered by warranty until the end of April so, if it is a sign, I want to get it sorted out whilst it's going to be free. Thanks in anticipation (hope you've all had a great Christmas & have a cracking New Year).

BMW won't repair it, they replace, and it sounds like your selector forks might be getting lazy on the 1st/2nd hub cluster. There's no synchro ring on first iirc, and i doubt the layshaft is out of line as it would be grumbling like a bastard.
Heard the 6 speed in the 130's are a bit weak in this area as well. |

Ah shit. I thought BMW boxes were rock solid...!
I'm in the market for a 330D or a 335D. I just replaced a Tip-Auto box on the benz for around £2k. |

BMW automatic gearboxes ARE rock solid. The early manual gearboxes rarely develop a problem, but if they do then it's almost certainly a warranty job as BMW are aware that there have been a few isolated issues. But there hasn't been a catastrophic automatic gearbox failure at all as far as I know from my previous conversations with BMW UK technical when discussing torque limitations etc. The only ones that have gone wrong have been blown up by crappy remaps for the 535d (which was the earliest adopter of the 35d engine and 6HP26 auto gearbox combination)

I would asume based on 'popped out of gear' we are talking about a manual not an auto. Also wouldn't the first thing to think about in this case be detents. Not that it matters the car is in warranty, just take it to the dealer, theyll probably give it to a tech overnight if they cant get it to fault during the day. Then you will get a replacement

Thanks for the input. I just glaze over when speaking to the dealers so wanted a quick 'heads-up' before I did so. I'll call them once the festivities are over...

BUMP...
Posted this last week when this place was quieter. Anyone anything to add before I call the dealer??? Yes, it is a manual box, and happens very rarely so highly unlikely it'll actually happen with an engineer onboard; can their computers pick up this kind of thing???
