DTC, Brake warning light, etc on cause of aftermarket tires and rims?
Hi guys -
My e90 325i is at the stealership right now and SA informed me that the reason the DTC warning, brake warning light, inflation warning light, etc., displays when I start the car (and stays on...) might be happening cause of my aftermarket rims and tires. I've got Hartge style Classic wheels with staggered 19" Goodyear F1 GS D3s front and rear. Says the "circumference ratio" etc., is something the system isn't digging and that's why the warning lights. Had the wheels and tires for about 2 weeks with no problems and then the displays show up. This happen to anyone else? |

I don't see why that would happen. Did you do the init after wheel/tire install? I think the SA is bs'ing you...

I saw your alarm thread, I don't have one so I can't comment for sure but I haven't heard anything about an upgraded siren in this forum...
You're supposed to initialize your FTM after every air pressure top up and especially with wheel/tire swap. As mentioned, I think this is BS...lots of members here have swapped out to wheels/tires of various sizes with no problems...I can't see how that would trigger off all those warnings/errors. Something's up. Suggest you go to another dealer for a 2nd opinion. GL

might be right. my friend's g35's tire pressure sensor is sometimes on because he has aftermarket wheels and tires. i don't know much about that dtc stuff though.

I just talked to the SA at Pacific BMW. I feel like I'm being taken for a ride. After the body shop fixed my bumper and taillight, all the warning lights have been showing up. Right? So after talking to the SA, he's telling me that the impact affected my rack and pinion and that it'll need to be replaced because of internal damage.
WTF? I'm no BMW mechanical engineer, but tell me, how does hitting a pole on my left rear bumper (and merely scraped and broken tail light...) aftect my rack and pinion? Then he goes off to say that my right rim was bent. THESE ARE NEW FREAKING WHEELS AND TIRES!!! I'm getting pissed at both the body shop and Pacific. No one has called me. The SA says he is working directly with the body shop, waiting to get an authorization from them to do the insurance work. This isn't warranty work. And damned if this is being claimed on my insurance again (claimed the bumper and tailight work..) Am I being scammed? This is bullshit!

I'd go right down and pick the car up and take it someplace else.
a light rear collision will NOT affect the steering rack. There is something wrong with your car, and it sounds like the dealership is trying like hell to get out of doing warranty work when they could just charge you insurance company! |

To all you e90poster's out there...
I'm a BMW tech, at a dealer near LA. If you want to "no-nonsense" full truth version of things, bring your car to me. I'm not going to rip you off, or let an SA try to. I will fix, under warranty, ANYTHING i can call warranty, and everything I tell you about your car (for example, a bent rim) will be the honest, demonstrate-able truth. PM me if you want to stop worrying when you take your car in for service. Matt |

Bullshit SA...just initialize your tires again to see if it'll correct the problem. For those dealers with dumb SA, just never come back. That's what I did to BMW of Fremont for bullshitting me too much.
