With all the SS# posted, I'm surprised the Nigerian scam artist haven't responded trying to get you guys to clear checks for them

Well I guess this isn't too much of a issue here since you can't steal too much stuff from a BMW.
But with some JDM models with easy swap parts and expensive OEM parts in, thieves can look up the forum and find the car they would like to rob then they run the plate to get the home address to find a car they want. For example, OEM s2000's seats cost around $7000 if bought from a dealer and can easily sell around $1000~1500 quickly and very fast to steal.

It's all about privacy. The internet is not a private place. Just because you post pics of your car on this site doesn't mean that only people on here can see them. They can be seen by anyone out there. If someone lurking the forums or scouring the internet for car parts to steal comes across your pic of your car with M3 steering wheel, BBS LM's or other pricey parts, all they can do is pay off some worker at the DMV and find your address.

Yes I know people will argue, "well you're driving around everyday with your plate # for the world to see" yes this is true, but you'd be surprised how many more people can potentially see your car on the internet than during your drive to work. Plus, its less likely that a would-be thief is driving around on the off-chance he will see a car that has what he wants, see your car in traffic, take down your plate #, and then go and try and find where you live. On the internet all they have to do is do a search for specifically what they're looking for, and voila.

Another reason is again, privacy but not to protect against vandalism or theft, but from shady dealers that might lurk the internet, trying to find people with 335's admitting to tunes and such. Then when that 335 with the same plate number comes in for warranty work without the tune, they have proof.

My last car was a 2000 Honda Civic Si in Electron Blue. That car had an extremely high theft rate for it's unique wheels, and engine and tranny. People on the forum I belonged to used to post with caution all the time, including not specifying where they lived, plates always edited out, and any identifiable location information like maybe a street sign in the background of a pic was always blurred out. Yet every month or so there would be a new thread where someone would post pics of their recovered Civic completely stripped. I guess I still have a bit of that paranoia with my BMW.

Maybe if you have jammers, radar detectors, etc. you don't want people to steal, or chips, etc. you don't want a dealer to know about.

The other reason for not doing it is that forums like these are an easy place for criminals to gather details of your car - like stealing the same model and colour of car as a forum member's, copying the license plate which reduces the chance of early detection - and gets you prosecuted for speeding violations on speed cameras.

Years ago, I found out by chance that a Brooklands Capri (British Ford model) which was only made in one colour (and only 1100 of them made) and identical to my Brooklands, was stolen in London and driven 400 miles north to Glasgow, where I live, with my number plates on it.

The result of this could have been, cops on the lookout for that car could easily spot it, but checking the number plates would reveal a legitimate owner of that model of car living in Glasgow and the car is driving north on the freeway and could be driving to Glasgow. If nothing else arouses suspicion, they let it go.

So, it's trivial to blank out the number plates but every little helps.

Well the answer is simple.

if you post pics now with your number plate and down the lane after say 6 months abuse some1 who want's to take it person because he could be anyone ( or just have money or pissed with his life) on this planet will come for you without having to use special techniques of hiring a fbi agent.

Even if that isn't your number and you are just being silly, it is very irresponsible to post a SSN on the Internet. There is a good chance that the number you posted is a legit number that belongs to someone and you may cause them problems without knowing it. Shame on you

Holy crap my brain just exploded... could you please rephrase that with at least some punctuation other than at the end of the sentence?

i would say a good reason why people probably blurr thier license plates is because if you have engine mods that could void your waranty and your dealer happens to recognize your car on the forum they would be able to verify by looking at your license plates and your screwed of your warranty.
