Are long cranks always the fuel pump?
or is there something else that can cause them?

Weak battery.
Aged electrical / plug wires. Bad angle sensor messing up your timing. Dying ignition modules. Poor (read : ghetto 3rd world blend) fuel / significantly old fuel. Water in your fuel. Someone managed to pour more than a dash of diesel before catching their mistake (and filling up with petrol the rest of the way), and you're just hard-to-ignite-cold. Weak/failing primer pump. Unusually cold weather. Engine sludge/gunk (i.e. car has sat a few months not used) Any number of issues related to aspiration ('funky' throttle valve response, or failing choke) Chunks of banana in your exhaust pipe... Gremlins... (Really I could go on) Get your codes checked ? -scheherazade |

i ask because i took the car in for long cranks and assumed it was just another bad HPFP. i ended up having my DME replaced. the old DME had no fault codes and the new one didnt have any either. i had been long cranking for a while on the old DME so i assumed some codes would have been thrown. but does the car have an error code or long cranks? or just when the pump fails ?

I've been having the same problem long cranks. I talked to my SA and he said if there is no code there's nothing I can do. The car is progressivley getting worse but I ffeel like I shouldn't have to drive my car to shit before I can get the stealership to warranty it or even look at the fuel pump.

theres really no fix, you just get another shitty pump and wait til that one dies
its just like a timed game... i'm on my fourth fuel pump (I dont just take it when it cranks long, it limps repeatedly and shows numerous fuel pressure codes)

no visible codes, no limp modes. dealer found the engine had the "long crank" code so replaced my pump. no questions asked. so take it to the dealer and check.

If you had a weak battery then there would be a slow crank.
