dyno question / black smoke
was spectating a few 335 owners dyno their cars today along with many many other fine automobiles.....e92 M3's, M6's, Rs6, gallardo, S4, etc
I spoke with one owner, dont know his name or if he is on here. He was running in my opinion a far too aggressive race map on 93 octane plus octane booster. Being that I didnt know him I wasn't going to speak up but I did help the techs get the rpm pickup taken care of...they dyno'd 2 others w/ no tq reading . when the run started I stood back and watched the tailpipes, in my estimation based on engine sound around 5,000-5,500 a largish puff of black smoke came out of both pipes for a brief period, then cleared up. I was thinking it was because the ECU sensed detonation and dumped fuel to protect things........what do you think?? I dont understand owners running hotter maps than they should just so they can have nice dyno numbers hell, they are probably seeing lower numbers than they would on the correct map.

When an engine knocks, you will see an immediate and brief puff of black smoke. Similar to what happens when a car misfires. But misfire usually doesn't happen just once. Once it starts, it keeps on going until engine torque drops below the misfire threshold.

he put down 350whp that run, they didnt stop the run fyi. funny thing, an 09 M3 DCT put down 315whp...he was pissed. That car should be 340ish from the factory. M6 w exhaust put down 426whp dynojet.

Since its rare more than one cyl will knock at the same instant, I cant see how that would produce a noticeable soot cloud. Are there not more than 1 knock sensors like is common for v8s?

That happened to my car on the dyno a while back running a v2 beta map. Immediately switched to the production map and it went away. Pretty scary...

Yo Sniz, sorry OT: But I want to ask all of you guys if you know whats up.
Back in the day when I had Dinan stage II, I beat this guy (buddy of mine - very active in the G community) in his G35 with blowers. V3 RevII would just have him for lunch not just take his lunch. He has a million excuses not wanting a race after that. Oh he claimed his timing was off...After he pissed all over a new 2009 Mastung GT500 convertible (manufactere tags still on. Dude was like 60y/o and totally wentfor it..) this is same day we raced too. with me following to ref... Here we go.. 2005 G35 with following specs. ENGINE MODIFICATION LIST: • Vortech Supercharger @ 8psi dyno proved 405.6RWHP • Unichip Engine Management • APS Tall Boy Plenum (upper collector) • DW 450cc Injectors • MRev2 (lower collector) • NISMO Radiator cap • NISMO Oil cap • NGK Plugs DRIVETRAIN 6SP/MT: • Stock SUSPENSION: • TEIN H Tech Springs (Z33) WHEELS/TIRES: • Rims: Custom one off, made to order, Work Varianza T1S (BGF) Staggered, stepped, black spokes, anodized faces, 20”F 21”R • Work Varianza T1S 20 x 9.5” Front • Work Varianza T1S 21 x 10.5” Rear • Tires: Falcon 452 • 255/30/20 Front • 295/25/21 Rear BRAKES: • OE Sport Package Ok, no idea what TQ he was puting down, but I had him every time, especially down low in the begining. What do you guys think? Can he even bother race a stage 1 Rev II 3.2..?
