Roof leak, 2 weeks at Sytner Harold Wood and they dont know how to fix it????

Hi everyone, i just want to know from anyones experience....does it really take 2 weeks to fix a roof leak problem? oh and btw, then get told they dont know how to do it?? so my car is still there and going to go into the 3rd week!!!

Sytner Harold Wood said they need 2 put a new seal, which they did...it stopped the leak, but made another leak on the other side. then they said they need to heat the seal up to 120 degrees - but then tell me their oven only goes up to 80!! Ive only had the car for 3 months but the service department give me so much grief!

so today they phone me and tell me they dont know how to do it and that they sent the car to an approved garage to see 'if' they can fix it? such dissapointing service from this dealership, and they never seem to care! only once in the last 2 weeks have they phoned me (which was today) to tell me that they sent the car to another garage cos they dont know how to do it. Very unprofesional!

has anyone else been in a similar situation? I dont know what exactly i can do about this. I phoned main BMW and they said that aint right (how the dealership is dealin with the situation) they said they will phone the dealership and help solve the situation. but i dont seem to be getting nowere?

I had exactly the same problem. I found a puddle of water under the rear seats after Xmas and traced it to water coming in under the rear passenger side window. The dealer fixed this by replacing the roof seals. However the leak continued and after the dealer spoke to BMW UK they realised that they had fitted the seals incorectly and had to refit them.

I then had a leak in the same place on the other side of the car and it went back in to have the seals refitted again. During all this time before it was resolved properly there was obviously standing water in the car whenever it rained and I had some mildew on the rear seat squabs so I insisted that they replace all the leather in the rear of the car which eventually they did.

Having checked the car after any significant rainfall since getting it back I think they may have fixed the problem fingers crossed.

According to the service manager he was aware of this issue although I gather that mine was the first that they had fixed.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your reply. was your leather damaged or stained? mine is on the side rear part..

do you know if they had to heat the seal? they said they must heat it to 120 degrees?

also, how long did they take your car for? or how long to fix it?

My leather was stained down the side and because it is beige it was easy to see and it was starting to smell as well. I also had the side bolsters, where the rear seat belts are, replaced as the water was running down the back of these.

I'm not aware of them having to heat the seals up but they definitely used some kind of sealant or mastic as I found a bit of this when I was cleaning the car a few weeks later.

What they did say is that the seals have to be fitted very precisely or they aren't water tight. This was the reason given for the second leak on the other side of the car. I believe they had to contact BMW UK for advice on fitting the seals.

The first attempt to fix it took 3 days, the second 2 days and the last 3 days. The replacement leather took 3 weeks to arrive.

Looking at your picture it looks as though your leak is in the same place as mine although I never actually saw any water until I pulled the seat squab and bolster out. The water was running down the inside of the trim and the foam behind this was absolutely soaked.

What made me suspicious of a leak was the excessive levels of condensation in the inside of the rear screen in the mornings. I had this before on an e46 convertible which also had a leak.

I hope this helps

This really helps a lot, thank you very much...i did notice condensation before but thought nothing of it. They have currently sent the car down the road to an approved garage so i will have to see if they know how to solve it? if not then maybe i should mention using sealant or mastic as they did on yours? now that you mentioned the water was running down the inside of the trim and into the foam etc...i will definatly check that when the car comes back, but im not sure if it leaked that much. i tried to wipe it whenever i noticed water on the side bolsters.

I am not sure if I have a leak in the same place as you guys but I do have water getting into the boot area. In the left hand side of the boot, lift up the flap that covers the storage compartment. Mine regularly has a few inches of water in it (It broke my compressor as thats where I used to store it )

Dealer reckoned they fixed it - guess what! They hadn't.

I will check under my seats at the weekend and make sure they are dry also

Hope you get a solution quickly

Already been back for 'em to try once - they reckon it was all done and sorted.

All I think they did was dry it out! My dealer is shocking also.

A week later full of water again The dealer are so crap I can't be bothered. Will be going soon anyway (good riddance to 2 years worth of hassle even tho it is a beatiful car!) and summer is coming. I just don't bother using the small compartment now.

I will defo check under the seats, how does the squab remove?

Absolutely - you're not tied down to any particular dealer. My car came from Harold Wood originally - now it's looked after by the guys at BMW Battersea
