"Hiding" swirls?
Hey gang,
My wife and I were looking at a car this weekend for her. A nice G35-S. Anyway, it had just come in and was in the back still. We liked the car enough, but the body was heavily swirled, and also had a few scratches. The salesman acted like this was no big deal and said they'd fix it all up. But I really wonder about that. I see you pros spending 12 hours on details and I doubt they aren't gonna do that. So, if he calls and says it's all better, do I trust him, or are they able to use some glaze or filler wax to hide the swirls until it's too late? Of course, aside from the scratches, I probably wouldn't mind the swirls since I feel like I've learned enough here to fix it up. Good excuse to buy a Flex, finally! But I'd want to use it in my negotiations, so if they "fix it" I might not get as much flexibility.

More than likely the dealer used a Speed Glaze or All-In-One product, and all that did was fill an imperfection. Ask them not to dealer prep it and take the money off that they normally charge.

Find a detailer of your choice who is educated and have the dealer agree to pay him to detail the car. Let them know you are also educated in this and you know they will just fill the paint in with their cheap dealer products and then the problem will be all yours once the car is yours.

For those interested, I showed up and things looked better. But after moving the car into some harsher light I could see nothing was polished, just waxed. Probably some filler wax, but definitely not actually polished.
So, I told them that the swirls on a black car were a dealbreaker, or I wanted another $300 off the price (to have it polished). The gave me $200 and I took it; close enough. So now I have the 08 335xi, and my wife an 07 G35-S. Both black ![]()
