The car has a DVD drive. My guess is that there will some self-installing map data update issued in about another 6 or 7 months. Will probably be crazy expensive.

Ouch, that is a pretty steep price. Way too expensive, especially when you consider that historically the maps for the DVD based iDrive have been updated twice a year.

Old DVD based iDrive uses map data from Navteq, while the new HDD based iDrive uses Teleatlas map data. Map data from the different map vendors is not interchangeable, so it is not a surprise that it did not work.

Figuring since we (MY09) get feature updates and installs automatically through the "air" it would be nice to get map updates that way as well. Or would that be way too reasonable for BMW?

There is no car-based GPS in existence that updates through the "air." That would be far more complicated that you would think, because of the amount of data that would needed to be moved, as well as the complexities in burning it to your HD.

1. Could you find out the exact Map version that you are being offerred for Euro 304?
2. Is this update going to be DVD based or is the dealer going to upgrade your hard drive directly?
3. Can you get the exact part number or the DVD name, etc...
