Suggestions for video recording at track day

I plan on heading to the track end of november and I would like to somehow make some sort of camera rig using my Flip Ultra camcorder. I know that the quality won't be that great b/c of no image stabilization, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Flip cameras at the track?

A friend of mine sent me a link showing a set up using a different camera but I thought I'd ask if anyone has had any experience with the Flip cameras. Thank you

if it has the tripod female thread on the bottom, there are a few standard products that should work.

I've only seen one, and it sorta had a weird "wobbling" affect due to (I think) the processor not being able to keep up 100% with the speed of the car's movements. It wasn't bad though, and after a bit, you don't really notice it anyway.

Do you have a digital camera? Lots of people forget that just about all point-and-shoot digital cameras these days have a movie mode. And chances are, the lens on that little digi cam is going to be much better than the one on the flip. I used my 4 year old nikon coolpix to take video at the BMWCCA event last June, and the vids came out very good. Sharp, and very clear, with decent sound. Image quality was better than the gopro cam we used at lemons.

The only issue I had were my 1GB SD cards could only hold about 20 mins of video. I have a stack of 2GB and 4GB cards now, so it won't be an issue anymore.

With a standard video camera, it's better to not use Image Stabilization when filming from in car. Those image stabilizations are designed to work with "SLOW" movements such as when held by hand and moved around.

When in a car, it becomes overwhelmed and does some weird stuff. If you just mount the camera solidly to something in the car, turn off the Stabilization everything works pretty well.

Best option is ChaseCam, however, it's just shy of $1000, a very good cheep option is the Aiptek for about $200, quality is VERY good with these, but no where near the robustness or upgradeablity of the Chasecam.

hmm ok ill google that aiptek one you're talking about. yes the flip has the female thread on the bottom.

I don't have a point and shoot camera I can use. I do have the t1i dslr camera that has video mode. But that's pretty big compared to the camcorders that most people use when recording at the track. I'll do some more research. Thanks guys

The ContourHD 1080p looks promising
http://www.vholdr.com/

or
GoPro Hero HD wide
http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php...2&productid=30

We use a Sony HD cam for our in car which works well. Definitely turn off image stabilization.

DO NOT get Canon HF11. The video image shakes constantly, with or without stabilization.

I think with Flip, the problem may be that the angle will not be wide enough, but I am only speculating.

thanks for the recommendations blip. yeah i am worried about the angle. If it's not feasible i won't even bother. But since I got the flip a couple months ago, and a track day is coming, i thought maybe it'd work.

I think the hero wide is great, on the minus side, curves looks straighter than they really are. You folks noticed that?
