335i Coupe 6MT

I thought I read somewhere that this is the same manual gear box that is used in the 6 series... is that correct?

Just wondering how much engine mods the gear box can handle.

I have tried to find the article i read which says the 335i models use the ZF type G gearbox in place of the usual 3 series Getrag 'box, but i cant find it.
I do know the ratios of the 335i are the same as the v8 5 and 6 series models. this is diferent to the current M3, and all the other 3 series models.
1st 4.055
2nd 2.396
3rd 1.582
4th 1.192
5th 1
6th 0.872
There were rumours going around that there was to be a manual version of the M5/6 with this box in it, but there is nothing official on the BMW website about this.

With a 3.46 rear end instead of the 3.08.

I really do wonder if it is a typo..because the steptronic equipped coupe and sedan are listed as having different rear end ratios...
Also, it isn't necessary all that bad having a taller ratio with the turbos. I mean..I believe I can just reach 60mph in 2nd gear..where the shorter ratio might require the 2-3 shift.

WTF? I just noticed that on BMW's website, that the coupe auto is listed as having a 3.46 final drive, but the sedan is 3.08

Is that a typo?

All the gear ratios between the coupe and sedan are exactly the same, so I wouldn't think they'd have a different final drive ratio in the coupe?

Does anybody know if this is true?

In my sedan at 80 mph the car is turning 2500 rpms.
What's the coupes (auto) rpm at 80 mph?

Oh and by the way, the new M5 with the manual uses the same manual tranny that BMW used in the prior M5. Meaning they dropped a 7 year old tranny in their $90K car.
And because it apparently isn't strong enough, they don't let you completely disengage the traction control when you get a manual M5.
That was a big F up on BMW's part.
Buy the M5 and you get a choice of the smoothness of a sledge hammer SMG tranny or the old manual that can't take full on launches and therefore your ECU limits your fun.

Interesting about the coupe/sedan auto rear differential. Seems like both should get the 3.46. Or atleast make it an option.

I don't think it was a power rating issues, as the 6-speed can handle the ratings of the M5, but from what C&D states, more of a liability issue. I guess they fear broken drivetrain parts from clutch drops, etc. Either way, I wouldn't want a restricted manual. The SMG isnt so bad, it just takes some practice to get it smooth. Auto mode is hopeless.

I read about that. That is a very poor decision on BMW's part. The owner that would get an M5 in Manual would be someone who is seriously interested in the capabilities of a manual M car, but cant thoroughly enjoy it due to TC settings.

Way to half-ass the job BMW

the smg isnt bad at all. I own a smg m6 convert and my shifts are pretty smooth a little jerk at lower speeds but if you give off the gas as your shifting it takes the jerk away.

I have made a comparison between 335i MT and AT referring to HP (PS in german). All in ne they are similar but there some interesting differences.
Its measured in km/h (1 miles = 1,61km/h)
for example: 60km/h 335i MT has over 60HP more than 335iA, 70km/h 25HP less than 335iA, the reason are different gears.

i notice ther is no manual option for the 335d, implying that the manual box is not deemed to be strong enough to take the torque.

thats correct..the 335d is only available with AT.
